The Savage Curtain Production Subtitles Question

Methuselah Flint

Hi guys,

One for the music experts...

On The Savage Curtain Production Subtitles on the first DVD boxset, when the Venus Drug music is played as Kirk, Spock and Lincoln prepare to beam down, the subtitles state that the music was re-recorded for Season Three.

No such re-recording is on the Soundtrack Collection.

Given the excellent and thorough set that we have, is this actually an error by the Okudas?

Cheers,

MF

I don't have specifics on this cue, but the way I heard it, the musicians' union had rules saying you could only use a cue during the season it was recorded for. To hear that piece in a subsequent season, you had to record it again.

But the re-recording was not always used. Sometimes it was just made to satisfy the union, and they'd re-use the original cue in the later episode. That happened with WNMHGB being heard in "The Lights of Zetar," and John Williams' early scores for Lost in Space that Lionel Newman re-recorded.

Regarding the Venus drug cue you're hearing, I'm at work and can't check my LLL box set now, but maybe the music editor on "The Savage Curtain" just cheated and used the year 1 tape. And maybe the production subtitles just assumed it was done by the book with a year 3 re-recording when it wasn't.
