The Rihannsu novels would make great JJ Trek movies!

Vice Admiral
Compelling female lead, LOTS of action!

JJ and the writers have said they're looking at old filmed Trek for possible ideas.

How can we get them looking at these excellent books?

30 second version:

The Romulans (Rihannsu in their own language) develop a technique by which they can use implanted Vulcan brain tissue to give Romulans the mental powers of Vulcans. A female Romulan commander, knowing that such a technology would tear her society apart, winds up asking Kirk and the Enterprise for help in stopping the experiments and rescuing a shipload of Vulcans that was taken by the scientists.

The 5 novels in the series are My Enemy, My Ally, The Romulan Way, Swordhunt, Honorblade, and The Empty Chair. They were all written by Diane Duane, and many consider them some of the finest examples of Trek Lit.

Why would Romulans need a Vulcan brain tissue implant to gain the mental powers of Vulcans ?
They are basically the same species. They have the genetic potential already

Or is it a shortcut because they are too bored to work on their spiritual-mental growth ?

According to Duane, the proto-Romulans left before the "mind talents" became as wide spread and powerful as they are in modern Vulcans. Therefore the modern Romulan brain isn't as "well wired" to make use of the talent as those of Vulcans.

Basically, the gene thereapy and surgery "jumpstart" the ability to use the mind talents, and also serve to make them more powerful.

5 novels? You could have enough material there for half a season (at least) of a JJ Trek TV series ;)

Although, if they did My Enemy, My Ally they would have to ditch the brewery and give the Enterprise a better interior, since there is a lot of combat in the later part of the book on the Enterprise.

I love those books. No way would I want them "wrecked" by a movie that no doubt wouldn't be near as good as the books.

^ Agreed. There is no way they could capture the amount of pure awesome contained in those novels and translate it to the screen.

I'm talking movies here, not the books.

My problem with the Romulans is that they're poorly defined villains. With the Klingons and the Borg you know who they are and what they're about.

The Romulans are always muddy and just end up shouting a lot.

If they have Romulans in a movie again it has to be an iconic species defining movie, otherwise it's a waste of time.

I'd love to see the scene from My Enemy, My Ally, where McCoy defeats Spock in 4 dimensional chess filmed.

I don't find the Romulans as poorly designed villains, I think it's just a matter developing characterization that utilizes their strengths.

Trek needs to get around to finally giving Romulans that definition. It's there by implication, both in the TV show and novels. It just needs to be spelled out.

Alex Kurtzman has, AFAIK, read more trek novels than I have. which, of course, is saying something!

I'd say he knows the whereabouts of those "excellent books". ;)
