The right time to end the Office

Joe Washington

I've been watching the new season of the Office and what I have been feeling more and more these days is that the show is beginning to overstay its welcome. I thought the perfect way to end it would have been Jim and Pam's wedding but since we're past that, I think this season should end with the shutting down of the Dunder-Mifflin branch and the staff going their separate ways. The finnacial crisis mentioned in the last episode could get the ball rolling for that.
It just feels like it's time to me because if the network don't end the show this season, they'll suck whatever creativity that is left of the Office out of the show to keep it going a seventh season.

I agree this season has been lacking a bit, which I think is due to the continued erosion of the characters into cartoon versions of themselves. Season 4 was generally terrible because of this - for the first three seasons everyone in the office, with the exception of Dwight, all resembled real people you could work with, albeit some with heightened characteristics for humour's sake.

Season 4 brought both the characters and the stories way over the top to the point it lost the quiet awkward humour that I loved, replacing it with farce. Season 5 was a bit better, or at least more consistently funny (I loved the Michael Scott Paper Company arc), but this season so far, with the exception of the wedding, has been a slide backwards again.

I'd like to see the show continue for at least a few more years, but the best advice I could offer the show-runners is just....tone it down. Make it relatable again.

This is why I'm not a fan of the American office. The original version kept things tight and knew when to quit. They went out with class. They had a specific story to tell. They told it and ended the show.

More American shows should take this as an example /stares hard at the Simpsons/

With all the characters in their cast, with so many hilarious supporting characters that only get fleeting screen time, I feel this is a show that could run for several more years, showcasing more of the side characters rather than focusing on Jim and Pam and Michael constantly.

Carrell is contracted through next season and everyone else is contracted through two more.

Americans don't like shows with limited runs. We like to see stuff go on forever.

Going back and watching some season 1 and season 2 episodes, I don't really like them as much as I do some later episodes. There's too much just standing around being unfunny. Once all the characters but Pam, Jim, Oscar, and Phyllis go insane is when the show gets funny.

I think next season will be it's last because I think Carrel will want to leave to do better things.

I've found it lacking a bit over the last few seasons, but then they'll have a great episode--like Jim and Pam's wedding--and I'm reminded of why I love the show. I'm not into the over-the-top antics, like this week's murder mystery game--I like the subtle stuff better and think the show does it well. But I still enjoy most eps, and am enjoying Michael and Jim as co-managers this season.

I still find the show worth watching, but I kinda have to agree that it feels like they've run out of new ideas.

It looks especially stale when you compare it to all the other fresh, energetic comedies on the air right now (Community, 30 Rock, Modern Family, etc).

I'm watching it through for the first time, and I'm in the middle of Season 3. I can honestly say that I am liking it a lot less than the first two seasons specifically because some of the characters are crazier. I absolutely can't stand Andy. He's obnoxious just to be obnoxious. He's like Dwight...but not even remotely funny.

Kelly is okay, but she's a little too annoying for me, too. I like the first two seasons because of how subtle the humor actually is.

Like Evan almighty? he's only really had one good movie, the 40 year old virgin. I think he will forever be Michael Scott.

Andy is probably my favorite, you'll get there with him.

"Break me off a piece of that FANCY FEAST!"

Kelly is kind of stupid and shallow, but she has her moments.

Andy is awesome. Give him a chance.

I was thinking this season was a little weak, but overall I still enjoy the show. I say milk it until it's dry.

Then maybe 1-2 seasons more after that.

:techman:

Andy's obnoxiousness does get toned down RoJoHen, so much so that he's really a different character from where he started. Can't remember if there was a good, in-universe reason for this though.

And yeah, The Office passed it's expiry date a while ago IMO. Probably around about the superbowl episode.

Probably the anger mamagement, his relationship with angela and the recent scrotum incident

I still find Andy overly obnoxious and frequently more annoying than funny. I liked him back in early S3 when they were still in Stamford. I was hoping he'd go the way of all the others following the merger.

What are you talking about? He's a Cornell man, for God's sake!

;)

I don't mind Andy at all. He cracks me up. And his performance at Jim and Pam's wedding was classic.

Oompa loompa, doompadee dawesome, Dwight is now gone, which is totally awesome. Why was he gone, he was such a nice guy. No, he was not, he was a total douche. Doompadee doom.

NBC will not cancel the show due to being the network's number one 18-49 demo barring NFL. They will milk it until the ratings drop like a stone, which might be a while and I see The Office breaking 10 years.
