I'm of the opinion that the so called Genesis Trilogy (Treks 2 through 4) was first use of the Reset Button, resulting in the static nature of Star Trek that came afterwards. In the beginning of TWOK, Kirk was an Admiral, and the crew had moved on with their lives. By the time TVH ended, Kirk was Captain, there was a shiny new Enterprise, and it was 1966 all over again. So who was responsible? Was it the studio bent on milking the frannchise dry by not shaking things up? Was it the actors afraid of not finding any work beyond Trek? Was it the fans who were growing increasingly conservative and settled and regarded the cast, and subsequent future casts, as family? Or was it a little bit of all three? Discuss.
