the planet Vulcan in new movie

one part of trek that used to bug me was the homogeneity of aliens and alien planets (barring "Let that be your last battlefield"). Planets are either ice planets/desert planets/ocean planets/etc... aliens are all dudes with matching clothes and haircuts. we can all note the exceptions to these rules. STVI did a nice job with the Klingons, Bajor, etc... heterogeneity seems a function of how often the aliens are on the show.

Is the planet Vulcan one big, barren rock, or will we see some rain forest Vulcan in the new movie? That would be something I'd get pumped over.

Vulcan has always been considered a desert-type planet. I doubt we'll see much of it beyond Spock's hometown, but I would assume that Vulcan has at least some variation in climate (it's the only way to explain the existence of Tuvok!)

I rather think we will get to see more than Spock's hometown: the bigwigs who are to judge over his future are likely to do their judging in a bigger city, perhaps the Vulcan capital (whatever its name). It might even be we never get to see Shi'Kahr at all - which is cool with me, because the TAS and ENT takes on its geography and architecture are interesting and appealing, but not something I expect Abrams to reproduce.

I always assumed Tuvok came from an even hotter and more arid part of Vulcan closer to the planet's equator.
