The Phantom of the Opera: Love Never Dies

I poster last year that Andrew Lloyd Webber was making a sequel to The Phantom of the Opera called Love Never Dies. I was, and still am, a bit skeptical about this. I mean how do you top a classic? Phantom is Broadway's longest running Musical, how can one hope to compare?

Well I just found this music video featuring a song from Love Never Dies. It's called 'Till I Hear You Sing. I don't know now. Maybe LVD will live up to expectations. I'm not sure it'll be a Godfather II, but it just might be an Empire Strikes Back.
Not quite as good as the first, but still good.

The syntactical similarity with Wall Street 2's subtitle of Money Never Sleeps makes me wonder about the possibilities of a crossover...

The Phantom gets cosmetic surgery and does therapy to solve his aggression and Raoul's days are over ;).

Seriously, I am sceptical, too. I'm not sure how Webber is going to develop the story further in a way that the audience will still feel for the phantom. Everything that needed saying was said. The story had a good ending. Why mess with it?

He gets plastic surgery, changes his name, becomes the DA of Gotham City, gets half of his body burned and it starts all over again.

Phantom's real strength is the spectacle. The story is weak, but the ostentation of the show itself coupled with its bombastic, melodramatic music is what turned it into a phenomenon during its heyday. I really don't think that the theatre climate would support a show like Phantom today. Lloyd-Webber's theater style doesn't really suit what today's audiences are drawn to.

I believe the musical is based on a novel, THE PHANTOM IN MANHATTAN, that was published several years ago . . . .

The YouTube account that that video is on also has a good interview with ALW talking about the development of the show.
