The Phantom of the Opera....2?

It looks like Andrew Lloyd Webber is hoping that lightening will strike the same place twice. Phantom: Love Never Dies is, if all goes well, set to open in London's West End, New York's Broadway and an Asian country which Webber hopes will be China.

The story will take place in Coney Island in or around the year 1900 and would feature, the Phantom, Madame Giry, Meg, Christine, Raul, and their teen aged son who also happens to be a musical genius. Link

I don't think is a good idea. TPotO ended in a good way. Yes we don't know what happens to him; but we do know that at least Christine didn't see him as a monster:
Christine:
Pitiful creature of darkness
What kind of like have you known?
God give me courage to show you
You are not alone
[Christine gives the Phantom a full kiss on the lips.
Stuned, the Phantom then releases her and Raoul.]

How can a sequel improve on this magnificent musical?

The movie, while making a good choice to move the Chandelier scene to the end, fouled up nearly everything else.

I don't know, maybe Webber has lost his creativity. The last musical of his I saw was Sunset Blvd. and while a few of the songs were catchy (Sunset Blvd., With One Look and The Greatest Star of All) the rest of the musical was bore.

So Phantom Phans, what do you think about a sequel to The Phantom Of The Opera?

I haven't really enjoyed any of Webber's work since Whistle Down the Wind, and I don't think he's really grown much as a composer since he and Tim Rice were working together.

The sun is dying... and the only way to reignite it is with song.

And in the end The Phantom will jump into the sun to sacrifice himself... or does he?

I have mixed feelings about it. It's one of those things that can either be really awesome, or totally crappy. Probably the latter, but I have to wait and see.

I got a bad pheeling about this.

Why do I get the uneasy sense that this will produce some bastard child from Christine and the Phantom?

Or a simple rehash in some way of the original story?

To have anything, any kind of sequel scrapes away so much of the ending of the original musical.

:(

Has there ever been a successful, high-profile musical sequel production? Unless there's a killer story and music, I just don't see this show gaining a big fanbase.

And don't forget the Broadway wonder bombs, Bring Back Birdie and Annie Warbucks.

I almost forgot: MAD Magazine's hysterical sequel to Fiddler on the Roof, which takes place after Tevye's family has come to America and assimilated so well that they also suffer from all of our societal woes.

I just don't see any way Webber will be able to duplicate, much less improve, on that magnificent set of songs from the original. Phantom was his masterpiece and it would seem that there is no place to go but down from there.

The original probably made so much money, Webber, or someone, thinks, lets just shake the tree again and see what happens.

Gaston Leroux didn't seem to think Phantom needed a sequel. But then again nothing screams Gothic romance like Coney Island.

So Phantom Phans, what do you think about a sequel to The Phantom Of The Opera?

Definitely not a fan of musical theater if this sequel has this cover in it then I'll check it out.

Interesting take on the song, The Phantom of the Opera. The women has a good voice and could probably preform the role of Christine. The guy was just horrible. Once he started singing I shut it off.

I doubt the sequel would use The Phantom of the Opera in it though. Christine already knows the Phantom, there would be no need for them to sing the song again.

Then again....Webber is not what he was in the 1970's and 1980's. Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, The Phantom of the Opera, Cats are all classics. He just might rehash some of the songs. I really hope he doesn't.
