The people upstairs.

I swear to God the people up there have opened a gymnastics studio or something. There's always running, thumping, bumping and crashing going on up there. It's insane.

I'm always sitting on my couch or desk chair on occasionaly walking softly to the bathroom or kitchen. If I had downstairs neighbors they'd probably think my apartment was vacant.

The people above me? A pack of wild hyenas.

The people below me occasionally play loud music. It's never been enough of a problem to have to do anything about, though.

Maybe they have a wii. I hate loud neighbours.
Where my girlfriend lives the poeple upstairs were loud so she went and asked them to turn the sound down and since then they have been ok.

We often joke that our upstairs neighbors like to bowl in the apartment. One thing I love, though, is the sound of their cat racing across the floor -- the gently thudding pitter-patter is adorable, and it's extra fun because our cat does the exact same thing. I hope our landlord downstairs finds it as adorable as I do!

I AM the upstairs neighbor. I don't know if I'm loud or not, but I'm sure that my walking around at all hours of the night can't be too fun for the people below me.

I used to get some 50's classics from next door, and upstairs tends to play some terrible dance music... every time it happens I counter with industrial and they go quiet.

Thats half of the noise I get from upstairs. This was only identified by a friend/gaming addict who took a shockingly accurate guess at what they could have been playing.

Today I was woken up by my neighbour's über annoying radio, at six o'clock in the morning. As you can imagine I was not too happy about it. It also didn't help that he has been entertaining guests until way past midnight the evening before.

The people above me have 2 dogs, i HATE the sound of them running about. They used to wake me up at 6am every day running around and barking until I asked the people upstairs not to let them out of the kitchen until 7.30.

They were pretty good about it though, and I have angered them by listening to extremely loud rock music in the past so it didn't do to go getting on my high horse about it. It works out OK though, they still annoy me a bit, I still annoy them a bit, but it's nothing worth coming to blows over. I say live and let live wherever it is possible to accomodate each other.

I will say one thing though, pets, wooden floors and apartments do NOT mix.

In every apartment I've lived in that's had a unit above me, I've had some kind of upstairs noise (with the exception of the 10 x 10 "cell" studio I lived in for a half year. The bathroom was so small you had to step in the shower to open the door).

It just comes with the territory. And sometimes the amount of noise made has more to do with the construction of the building (i.e., lacking properly sound-insulated floors, having wood floors instead of carpet, etc) that the activities of the people upstairs.

I suggest getting a top floor apartment, next time you're looking. Sure, getting your groceries in is a PITA if you don't have an elevator, but it's well worth it in that you feel as if you're the only person in the building ;)

Awww, I had that at my old apartment and I loved it! However, that apartment was badly sound-proofed (and weather-proofed), so the people that lived above us were always complaining about the noise we made, even though we didn't make much noise! They pounded on the floor once when three of us were having an average volume conversation in the kitchen. It wasn't even late at night!

I hated those people. I tried to be so nice and accomodating, but they were just assholes. I think they just assumed we were stupid kids (which, I admit, is understandable). As it happens, they stopped complaining when they came down and asked us once if we had any pot. I think it embarrassed the guy when we told him that none of us smoked.

Now I live in a ground floor apartment, and two of my good friends live in the apartment above ours. This presents it's own problems. For one thing, there are stairs on either side of my room. People are always pounding up and down them so much like gorillas that it'll cause my screensaver to go off! However, I love being able to tell when my friends are leaving their apartment, because I'll run to the door and scare them or yell something at them down the street.

The other noise problem is my roommate. He is SO friggin' loud that you can hear him walking around down here from upstairs. Our bathroom is underneath our friend's stairs too, so they often joke about how they can hear him singing Irish folk songs in the shower.

This is true, while I was renovating my apartment I found that the lounge ceiling had been dropped to allow a 2 inch piece of foam insulation board to be inserted, I can hardly hear a thing in the lounge, but in my bedroom which is exactly the same construction but without the foam insulation it's like listening to a herd of elephants stomping about.

Unfortunately it would be a huge job to do the same to the bedroom and would require a new ceiling, so i'll just have to put up with it.

My building is old and has thick floors, ceilings and walls, so I hardly ever hear a peep out of my downstairs neighbor (or the people in the houses to either side) except on the very rare occasions when he actually turns on his amp to play guitar, which I don't mind.

I'm on the top floor, so he might have to put up with the cats running about occasionally, but I do make a point of having the majority of my floors covered with rugs and never wearing shoes in the house so as to reduce any noise he might be subject to. We've both lived there almost 8 years and I've never had a complaint, so I must be a decent upstairs neighbor...

I will never get anything but a ground floor apartment. Moving would be a HUGE pain in the ass. A PITA I just assume not have.

If you live in a two-story complex like I do, being on the top floor just means about 15 steps in a single direction. Really no big deal.

My complex has about 500 units, so soundproofing was not high on the priority list of the builders. I live on the top floor, but I can still hear certain sounds from my downstairs neighbors.

Noise is probably the biggest complaint I have about apartment living. I'm not yet ready to exchange it for the different problems that accompany a house, but I definitely will not live where I am my whole life.
