The Penny Drops? BBC Wales to make "His Dark Materials"

Could this be the real reason why we don't know what's happening with Doctor Who next year?

A production of that size is going to eat up a lot of studio space and money and need a suitable time slot; say 8-ish on Saturdays next Autumn, pushing DW Series 10 to Spring 2017.

By the way at the risk of being a retrograde old sexist, I'd never have recognised Julie Gardner in that photo.

It will likely have more freedom to be closer to the book than the butchered cinema release of The Golden Compass. Being on the BBC means there are no advertisers to upset and the religious right don't have any influence in the UK.

^True, but obviously they are wanting to sell this to the US given its a co-production?

It'll probably be on BBC America or certainly a cable station. And given what's on those these days I doubt there'll be any issues.

Wasn't that the same photo used in the summer announcement of her new Bad Wolf production company? But yes, I agree she looks completely different than she did when she worked on Doctor Who with RTD.

I wonder how they're planning to pull off all the talking animal daemons on a TV budget. They're integral to the themes of the novels, so they're not something that could be easily removed.
