The other Janeway

Flying Spaghetti Monster

Vice Admiral
Admiral
I'm not a Voyager person. I've been watching ti a bit lately.

I was never a huge fan of Mulgrew's acting or her voice, and particularly her "hands behind her back" penguin walk. I have to say now that while I still feel as I always did, she has much more energy and spunk than other actress they had cast. I'm sure you all have seen this

but it's new to me.

You couldn't understand her. She sounded half-asleep. Her syllables blended together and she had no enthusiasm, no enunciation of words necessary to understand the often techie Trek dialogue.

What I am saying is that acting is a very difficult thing to do. Even for experienced actors. If they had cast this lady, VOY would have died a quick death, and the reputation of Trek would have been sullied.

Kate made a great Janeway, and the character is pretty well known even outside of Trek. Janeway is a solid captain, thanks to her; I think so, and I am more of a Seven fan myself.

The difference between the two of them is astounding. Bujold as the first female Captain of a series would not have worked; Mulgrew worked brilliantly. I can't imagine, from that scene, Bujold being able to bring out the caring/maternal side of Janeway that we got sometimes.

Geez! And people have said that Mulgrew was "maternal"? Bujold was not interested in the role and flat out looked and acted "old."

Mulgrew was a breath of fresh air. She only got "old" when TPTB decided she was supposed to in the last 2-3 seasons. I really liked the Janeway of seasons 1-4--someone who was alive and passionate. She had a real twinkle in her eye back then. Later on ... not so much. Likely more due to the generally lower-quality writing and change of focus off the captain than to Mulgrew getting tired of it all.

She just didn't seem that into the roll.

In that scene, Genevieve Bujold seemed old, tired, a bit annoyed, and non-committed, like she was a teacher directing an exercise. :borg: She seemed uninterested by the role. She was certainly not the best choice for Captain Janeway. But that doesn't mean G. Bujold is a bad actress. She just didn't fit that character. And I did understand her.

Seeing the Bujold footage on the DVD extras was life changing for me. I went from worshipping at the altar of Mulgrew to flat out stalking her all over the globe. I only got back last week. ;)

oh I have seen that before. And even if you hate voyager and hate Janeway you have to give credit to kate Mulgrew.

I have no idea what the hell the casting people seen in Bujold but she was no meant for that part...Voyager would of been killed after the first 4 episodes.

With her trying to cover up her french accent she sounded muffled almost sound like a vulcan at times to especially in he scene with Tuvok in her ready room.

If I recall correctly, they didn't make her audition at all. She was a big name and when they found out she was interested, they handed it to her right away site unseen. Luckily, she recognized how ill-suited she was for the role and episodic television and got the hell out while she still could.

id never cast anyone no matter how big name they are for a role...it takes chemistry between the actor and the character to make a sucess.

Welcome back! :)

There is such a large difference between the two. Kate Mulgrew is much better. The other woman did not seem to be enjoying herself.

True.

I was never a huge fan before of Mulgrew as Captain, her voice and her penguin never struck me as very captain like, aside from the fact that the writers had her make ill-informed decisions, and having her meet other versions of herself (alternate universes, older versions) really made me annoyed. But at least she seemed to enjoy the part. She spoke in way that I could understand each and every word, and though I might not know what a particular kind of particle or field may be, she spoke with clarity and I could gather enough from context to understand the scenes.

After watching her more lately, and then after comparing her with this other lady, i really appreciate what Mulgrew as done.

I really liked her in that old movie "Remo williams" which also had Joel Grey from "Resistance" and the dude that played Reece from DS9's "Seige of AR558"

Good movie, cheesy but good!

I did find her voice to be irritating. It was perhaps due to her heavy smoking. It would seem to be a lesson to everyone, if you smoke that is what you will sound like:guffaw:

She has some great one liners in this film. Definitely cheesy, but good fun.

Genevieve Bujold isn't that big a name. Whoever cast her should have his/her head examined. :scream:

I always found Kate Mulgrew's voice rather mellow and not harsh at all. She was certainly much more believable as a captain, although I found her "perky" moments to be a bit overexaggerated.
