I guess this is the episode where Halston Sage bows out for the season.

There's no real preview online yet that's specific to this episode. FOX continues to run generic trailers with bits from several shows.

Even I am growing weary of the Elephant Man proclaiming the ship "Totally sick, man." Dude's got no ivory.

I dreaded this episode very much :confused:. Alara's one of my favorite Orville character. Was impressed by Halston Sage's performance in "Command Performance," "If the Starts Should Appear" and "Firestorm" and I dreaded the prospect of not seeing Alara ever again .

    There are trailers which shows
Alara's firing phaser at the episode's Xelayan baddie (played by John Billingsley), then engages in a hand-to-hand fight with him

I don't like the prospect of Alara dying in this episode. Fingers crossed she won't become the Orville's Tasha Yar....

I hope not. I'm holding out hope that this is a temporary sabbatical.

Yeah, I'm a little worried. She is easily my favorite character, & is debatably in a tie with Claire for being the most engaging & relatable character. She's the character I most look forward to seeing in any given episode, & that's going to be hard blow, tbh

Not sure if this is a spoiler or not, but why is Halston Sage leaving? Better opportunities elsewhere? I remember reading about it earlier but I'm unable to Google up any reason for the actress' departure. A shame, I agree she's an endearing character and is well played against all the toilet humor the male characters tend to supply.

Sage has a part on another series that conflicts to some degree with The Orville.

I don't know that I have strong favorites or least favorites on this series; I like them all and no character really dominates the show. MacFarlane is smart enough not to treat Mercer functionally as The Star or central character even though in several senses he is.

I guess I'm most fond of Bortus, Alara, Claire and Ed. Which is to say, half the cast are my favorites and as for the rest - well, I like Gordon and John and Kelly a whole hell of a lot too. And Isaac.

I wouldn't mind never seeing Dann again. That's a minority opinion right now, I know...but Christ, just because I have to work with people like that doesn't mean I want to see them on TV. ;)

I can't help but wonder if her breakup with Seth McFarlane also played a bit of a role in her at least needing to take a break for a while.

Along with the ratings drop between s1 eps 1 and 2, I fear the show may be axed with this development being another reason. I hope it's temporary too. She's part of a rich ensemble cast with some terrific storylines; even "Krill" took a left turn that reminded me it's not "Star Trek" despite having a robust Trek-like feel. And Seth is amazing with serious drama and as storyline writer given the show's parody nature - which allows it to use more casual dialogue without straining credibility nearly as much (but not always). But the show without her will seem weird.

I can't see her leaving having leading to the show being canceled, it's got a bit enough ensemble that it can lose one character. It's also worth keeping in mind that we don't know what her replacement will be like, we might all end up liking her even better. I've liked enough replacement characters to learn not to worry.

    S1 was in 2017.

The drop between eps 1 and 2 this year is pretty similar to the drop between eps 1 and 2 last year - the premiere in both cases followed an NFL Sunday game to boost the show's exposure.

Dr Pulaski texted her and told her to avoid the turbolift shafts at all costs... ;)

If this is the end of Alara, I'm gong to miss her. I loved her in episodes like Command Performance and especially Firestorm. Maybe the new security chief will be good. I hope this episode is good too. The first episode was kind of boring and the second episode was better but kind of disturbing. We need an episode like If the Stars Should Appear.

Followed by a text from Tasha Yar, telling Alara she shouldn't go to an away mission to Vagra II to explore an oil spill-like creature named Armus :guffaw::guffaw::hugegrin::hugegrin:

Agreed. The first two episodes were OK but certainly not stellar like "If the Stars Should Appear," "Majority Rule," or "Mad Idolatry." News already circulating that the show's live-watch ratings were down compared to Season 1.

While one can argue the drop of live viewers can be countered by those watching streams and reruns later, it wouldn't help matters if the next few episodes were not as good as the ones from Season 1 named above :confused:

That's what I'm afraid of. I think the strength of this series really is the characters, but you can't premiere a season with an episode like that after being off for a year. And then you have a second episode about porn addiction and while that is a good topic, I'm not sure if casual viewers are going to go for something like that. Those last two episodes really would have been better in the middle of the season rather than starting the season.

I'm really keeping my fingers crossed that this episode will be good. What I think might happen is that it will be an emotional episode where Alara leaves, & while that means it will probably be a very good episode, hopefully the best of the season so far, it may also be yet another unattractive episode to non-fans, which could possibly further sabotage the season... a season that is fastly approaching the finish of it's 1st quarter

When you only have 14 episodes in a season, having the first 3 or 4 be unappealing to casual viewers or the mass market, is not a good plan imho

My thoughts exactly. Given the strongly negative reactions from a number of reviewers on "Primal Urges" (like 'The Oldest Nerd' which has since been removed), I think the episode's topic has alienated many fans who generally have a favorable opinion regarding the series.

If these fans were alienated by the episode, don't ask me about first time viewers who were told by their friends about how good S1 of the series was, only to see an episode focused on porn addiction with lots of 'in your face' scenes.

They should've kept 'Primal Urges' in its original schedule and aired it towards the end of S1. Then aired 'Home' as the premiere episode and 'Ja'loja' as the second or third episode of S2 (granted, they'll need to put Alara's scenes in 'Ja'loja' somewhere else). I think it would've been a much stronger premiere episode which would've delighted both old and new fans :confused::confused:
