Others were reportedly confused when McCain abruptly left the stage to find a mirror and softly touched his face while whispering to himself, "Oh, boy. Who am I this time?"

At this point, would anyone think that's strange?

He does seem to become a different candidate every few days.
Although the line about how "his main goal was to teach McCain about what's truly important in life" reminds me of something I always wondered about the premise of Quantum Leap. What good does it do for Sam to turn these people's lives around if they then jump back into their bodies with no memory of what happened during Sam's tenure, and telling a bizarre story about being abducted into the future and looking like somebody else? Do the folks uptime at Project Quantum Leap give these folks therapy while they're there? Are they allowed to monitor Sam's activities so they're up to speed when they leap back? Or is there some kind of mind-merging effect where they remember Sam's actions as if they were their own?
I don't remember this circumstance ever coming up, though. When did Sam ever teach the leapee a life lesson? Like you said, it's be impossible.Although the line about how "his main goal was to teach McCain about what's truly important in life" reminds me of something I always wondered about the premise of Quantum Leap. I believe the answer to that lays in the established "swiss-cheese" mental effects from when Sam jumped into someone. That "swiss-cheese" is part of his host's persona remaining behind and sharing Sam's experiences while he is in their body. So that when they are shunted back to their proper place in time and space, the memory of what Sam did while he posed as the host overwrites their memory of the future. This also explains why Sam's memory of his prior jumps gets spotty, as he leaves a lot of that memory behind when he jumps.
