The Office 'Goodbye, Toby' season finale

I haven't seen a thread on this yet so I apologize if one is out there. I watched the finale on Thursday and again last night, and I really liked it.

There were lots of surprising moments, so I won't post any spoilers but I loved the part with Ryan, and the thing between Kevin and the new HR person was hilarious :guffaw:

I want to kick Michael for his stupid decision at the end. What a jackass.

I loved the moment on the ferris wheel where the new HR woman said something, and Michael replied, "That's what sh....*ahem*." It made the bit with Jan even worse.

Great episode. The final scene with Phyllis and a certain couple was pretty awesome. Can't wait for this show to return in the fall!

No poll...I'd give it a above average/very good rating. Got plenty of laughs out of it and while I'm sad to see Toby go the new HR chick seems like she'll be interesting.

Though the twist with the proposals was good. I was ready for Jim to get a pretty good proposal and Andy beats him to it! I was even more surprised by Angela saying ok.

Got to say my opinion of Angela dived thanks to the ending. Feel sorry for Andy because he actually really likes her. Do think that Angela and Dwight are a better pairing but still. Once he finds out I can't see him staying at Scranton and I like his character.

rofeta I agree with you about a certain person in your spoiler, and I'm wondering if that person will move over to the as-yet unnamed Office spinoff that they're producing. Sounds like it may be a set-up to make that happen.

I love the fact that the new HR chick is basically the female version of Michael.

When he did his 'yoda' thing I was expecting her to have a complete 'wtf' reaction, but no - she joins in. Bwhahaahaha! Then her next few lines creased me.

I did not know they were planning a spinoff...interesting.

For me the stuff with Kevin made the episode. :guffaw:

We used to have a guy that was mistaken for a special needs kid, so it really does happen.

She seems a lot more functional than Michael. But yeah, shes obviously 'perfect' for him. Over all she seems like a great addition to the cast if she sticks around.

Loved the prank at the beginning. havent seen one recently, and really enjoyed it. sad to see toby go, hope paul lieberstein stays on as a writer/producer, he's written some of my faves. being in sales myself, i thought it was fishy when ryan
was having them log sales in twice, to show that the website was making sales, should have at least violated company policy, if not the law.

while andy played like it was a spur of the moment, perfect "thing," his parents were there, for christs sake. that's why i love andy, he tries so hard to play some things off as spontaneous, when to everyone else, they're obviously not.

holly, hilarious. i love that michael was so smitten, he didnt tell dwight that the hazing was off. also that kevin just thought that she was being nice, if not flirty with him, and had no clue she thought he was "special needs"

suprised we didnt see david wallace address anything regarding ryan, obviously that is forthcoming.

happy for pam and design school, think that could open the door for the spinoff, maybe. "Congratulations. no no, jim, let me finish. Congratulations for doing your job." -ryan.

hourlongs are always good for me, above average.

"It's not rabid."

No, none of the regulars are going to be in the spin-off from what they've said. Thankfully.

Loved the prank.

"Give me your earpiece."
"Nope, can't do that. Not sanitary."

Great episode. Kevin being mistaken as being special was just so hilarious because he acted just like he always does but I never saw it in that light before and it was perfect.

I was disappointed that Toby didn't do something stupid at the end, ie kissing Pam or confessing his love to her or something. Hell, he doesn't even insist that she sits next to him at the dinner? JIM sits between them?

Agreed, the Holly/Kevin stuff was some of the best material of the whole season. I was killing myself.

I'm sad to see Toby leave too, but I understand the actor wanted to step back and focus more on the writing side of things. Seems like Holly will be a good addition though.

Disappointed with Andy beating Jim to the punch, I was hoping for some Jim/Pam payoff in the finale. As for the Jan thing....we'll see, though her "if I were 22, then sure...but I'm 38. I wanted to make this one count" talking head was hilarious.

I'm super proud of Pam, she's grown so much in the last few years. Back in season 2 when Jan mentioned the idea of design school to her, she came up with 23058920 reasons not to do it. She was comfortable in her life and was satisfied with that. It's great to see that she's stepping out now and wanting to make something more of her life and can put that ahead of her relationship with Jim and other things.

I thought I read in the live blog on NBC's Live Blog that they realized they were light on the pranks and included some in the final two episodes of the season.

The blog also confirmed that Paul is staying on as a writer.

having missed most of the first half of this season due to work, i wasnt entirely sure, but from what i had seen that seems fairly consistent, light on the pranks.

and as i said earlier, i'm glad paul is staying on as a writer. but i will miss the "sad eyed redhead," to put it in daryl's words, and seeing him put up with the hate and disdain that emanates from michael towards him and him alone.

With Ryan getting arrested and Toby going to Costa Rica, it kind of appears that two of the writer-actors are going to just be writing now. Funny with Ryan, though, I've met people who had that kind of quick rise/quick fall due to ego.

I loved the episode until the ending. All the great little emotional moments got demolished in the end - couldn't we at least have had ONE payoff?!?! :( I'm mad about Michael, I'm mad about Jim & Pam, I'm mad about Andy/Angela/Dwight. They built us up with so much potential joy and then squashed it in the end. :( It was just mean. :p

Let me agree with all that say Kevin as "mentally challenge" was hilarious and yes I too never saw it that way until Dwight framed it as such. Laughing at the joke of course and not people with an acutal condition...for clarity.

I like Toby. Without him who is Michael going to hate?? That dynamic was one I liked on the show. I wonder if Ryan/Toby are gone so they can focus on writing the spinoff show?? Maybe their characters return either there or back in Scranton once the spinoff is up and running.

Angela accepting the proposal then caught by Phyllis with Dwight at the end was two stunners for sure.

Did the new HR woman, like Michael or was she just defusing him cause she picked up on his HR hostility? She is trying to be fun and funny and sensed Michael saw HR has a blackhole to those things. Her and Michaels last scene confused me further.

Lots to like about this finale and it did not dissapoint.

Has any reason ever been given for Michael's dislike for Toby? Aside from him seeing HR as people ruining his fun, was there anything specifice that set this up?

I think in the beginning she was just trying to defuse the situation, but by the end of the day she actually liked Michael, as her trying to get him to join her for dessert seemed to show. It's amazing how Michael can seem likeable when he tones things down, and pulls a Constanza-esque "the opposite couse of action must be correct."

And the episode was awesome, except that I too was hoping for a little more resolution at the end. Kevin/Holly, Michael/Holly, Ryan, it was all great.

I think it's mostly because Toby answers to Corporate, and not to Michael. He doesn't fit into the hierarchy, neither subordinate nor superior. He's just there to spy on Michael for people who also aren't in the hierarchy. Or, as Michael himself put it:

"Toby is in HR, which technically means he works for corporate, so he's really not a part of our family. Also, he's divorced, so he's really not a part of his family."
