I was just coming to report this news. Very sad to read about him. I always think Smithers gave one of the most underrated guest performances on the show. He has to convey a lot, and most of it is without dialogue to support his changes in character. The transformation is in the performance and it’s a testament to Smithers’s work that Merik’s final action makes sense after watching the rest of the story.

It’s a very nicely written tribute; I’m glad they found a good friend to share some details that go beyond her Wikipedia entry. I also recently learned she attended the 1963 March on Washington with some other actors, which added to a fuller picture of her life.
