The next "LOST"

After the story of Lost is laid to rest, what idea of a TV show do you think would make a worthy replacement for the show in its post-demise?

It's so hard to say what's going to be popular AND great at any given time. I find myself wondering the same thing about movie trilogies. It's been such a long time since we had a super popular and original movie trilogy (The Matrix? Lord of the Rings?).

Lost was a happy accident. There won't be anything to replace it, at least not intentionally. Attempts to recreate the phenomenon intentionally come across kinda pretentious and eye-rolling, with lots of episodes that just meander aimlessly under the guise of trying to be deep and thought-provoking. Fringe is a good example of that.

^ Fringe isn't really trying to be Lost. The fact that the main arc (unfortunately) usually takes a back seat to a more episodic format alone is enough to distinguish them.

Ehh I duuno bout that entirely, although Fringe has it's faults. It's like Lost without the Wild goose chase on and off the island. Well more or less. It's still early in the game, although I think a show that is also early but meanders in the guise of being thought provoking is Flash Forward.

Plus this show gets compared alot to, or at least early onto Twin Peaks probably because of the mystery aspect and look how long ago that was on

Yah, any story or idea can and could be made into a fantastic series. I would never have thought a series about people surviving on an island after a plane crash would be any good (or at least not great) especially since it was inspired by the reality series Survivor. But they did it.

Same with Twin Peaks. "A teenage girl gets murdered in a small Washington state logging town and an FBI agent is sent to investigate it." That could have been all kinds of suck, especially if it was done today by teh guy who bring us all the CSI's and other cop shows. But it also was fantastic.

So it's impossible to predict what the next great show will be.

For me, a show like LOST is a once in a lifetime thing. And that's enough. Never again do I want to get hooked on show like this.

Definitely not FlashForward, which was the intention of ABC. They should have held off on it a year. Invasion, Surface, and Threshold were also not the next Lost. V probably isn't going to be the next Lost. It'll be something we least expect.

How about a sequel drama focusing on Jack's medical practice, Sawyer's repo-man operation, Hugo's food channel, and Miles' psychic network, called "AfterLOST"?

I don't see anything on the horizon to remotely replace Lost.

Dexter the other great show on TV, but it's too different for a sensible comparison. And probably only has a season or two left in it.

Yah, Dexter is great. Supernatural is really good as well, but is a bit to episodic to have the full impact that Lost does.

Season 1 of Fringe was definitely an X-Files/Lost wannabe with some pretty cringe-worthy/cheesy moments but towards the end of the season and most of Season 2 the show has really evolved nicely into a pretty compelling story that isn't quite on the level of Lost but is certainly a well done Sci-Fi story based drama.

I thought Invasion, Surface and Threshold all predated Lost by several years. This would preclude their being the next Lost, as Lost followed them onto the TV schedule.

No...

The next LOST would need to have the same basic ingredients of a simple, basic premise, likeable and loveable characters, familiar but unreal settings, and a series-long story arc with many mysteries that has everyone producing many theories and which keeps everyone guessing right up until the end.

I think we've already had all of that in a British TV show called "Life On Mars."

That's where most of the trying-to-be-LOST crowd falls down.
