The new Star Trek phenomenon..in a nutshell.

Okay, so I just saw the new Star Trek movie. I was one of those skeptical people going in, but have to admit, I LOVED IT!!!

BUT....yeah, you knew that was coming, right?

For people to be going around saying this movie is far superior to any of the last few Star Treks we've had..well, these people are deluding themselves. I can name numerous episodes of Voyager or Enterprise that were far superior to this movie.

This opinion people are tossing around that the new movie is finally Trek being done right after years of it NOT being done right all boils down to one thing and one thing only. It's the first new Star Trek we've had in four years, after having TONS of Star Trek thrown at us constantly since TNG started in 1987. That's it, that's all.

This is coming from someone who loved the original timeline, and is so far, loving the new alternate reality. I've seen every minute of every Star Trek ever produced, but I probably viewed it differently then most people. See, I used to tape the show every week, and after about two months of shows were saved up, I would sit down and watch them all at once, then another two months or so would go by until I watched any more Trek. Did this since TNG started. So I never really got burned out on Star Trek, so the four year drought didn't really affect me too much, because I was used to going long periods of time without new Trek. (And during that four years, if I felt the need to watch some new ST, I would tune in to one of the various fanfilm series out there :) )

That being said, I did love the new movie, but seriously, the story was no more outstanding than any other Star Trek production we've had recently. I hope they can step it up storywise for the sequel.

(It was great to see Nimoy as Spock one last time. A fitting end to his story.)

I would, but then everyone would just start disagreeing with me. Not the point behind this thread.

Seriously, the storytelling in the new movie was nothing outstanding, which is one of the complaints I've heard leveled towards Voyager, Enterprise, the last few Trek movies.

But this one comes along and everyone is all WOW, YIPPEE!!! It's just because there hasn't been any new stuff in four years.

Paramount was totally right to give the franchise a break.

The storytelling isn't more outstanding than Voyager and Enterprise, but the characters are a helluva lot less boring. I'd claw my eyeballs out again to avoid hearing Chakotay talk about my people or listen to Captain Archer trying to inspire with his insipid gazelle story.

Then you can't, because you stated you could, but didn't qualify that people wouldn't agree, just as people won't agree this is the best or worst trek movie.

Well, I can name episodes I think are superior, but I don't presume to think everyone will agree. But you're right I should have said "episodes I think are far superior". ;)

And while I like a lot of the characters from the various ST series just as much as the original crew, I would have to totally agree about the Chakotay thing. LOL.

The story-telling might not be outstanding, but it's solid, plausible (well for scifi anyway) and thrilling. That's what makes a film a hit.

I simply don't understand why we can't see this as a continuation of Star Trek. Jeesus star trek has always been about embracing the bizarre or going off in new directions. This is it folks. We finally have star trek back on the air .. enjoy it. and stop bashing voyager and enterprise, they were great <- even the talk about gazelles.
