The new series has me thinking of old beginnings...

"Captain's log, stardate 41153.7: Our destination is planet Deneb IV, beyond which lies the great unexplored mass of the galaxy. My orders are to examine Farpoint..."

It just hit me the other day (even though I knew this) that when that episode premiered it was the beginning of 18 YEARS of continuous Star Trek on TV. 1987 to 2005. That's a long freaking time for one franchise.

No wonder we act like spoiled babies sometimes. Yes I include myself in that.

I am very excited. I was really too young/busy to appreciate the beginning of Enterprise. This will be the first Trek series that I have the time to delve into all the details and pre-production gossip.

The reality IS...ST fans are the most catered to group in all of TV. We have show after show dedicated to us (and making a few $ of course) plus a whole move series that has generated $1.919 BILLION Worldwide not adjusted for inflation. We are entitled and act like spoiled malcontents. At least SW fans have the decency to back their show even when it's nonsense. lol

My husband says that he loves Star Wars, but he refuses to accept that Episodes I-III exist (I myself did not find them all that terribly bad). We are only allowed to watch the DVDs that have the original movies (on the 2nd disc) without the special additions. We cannot buy the blu-rays.

I think that some of us Star Trek fans who grew up either with the original series or the Next Generation as the first show we watched have a sentimental attachment. We view that Star Trek is a certain way, and are not as interested in the later series or movies that we feel do not have the same spirit. We can appreciate the wonderful shows we have been given, but I do not feel we are obligated to watch the newer material if it is in a different style that does not appeal to us.

We have a far more intimate relationship with the material, & everyone involved in it, than any other fanbase. We are the granddaddy of all fandom. Nothing else holds a candle to it. I can tell you where & when Jean-Luc Picard was born, when he joined the academy, & detail major points of interest in his entire career before he ever even got shown to us in farpoint, & I'm a mild, almost passive fan. We have a technical manual for god sake

Are we fawned over & pampered? Are we obsessively critical & protective? Absolutely, because it's a special thing, & we care about it more than any fiction has ever been cared about, ever. You can think that is unimportant, but I think it's like Excalibur. Every writer or producer would want to yield that power if they could

I don't know. The Doctor Who fans might have something to say about that....

Never brought to cinemas, less spinoffs, less numbers, less revenue gained. Not as big. Trek is bigger, & that only happened because we wanted it to. I don't watch Dr. Who, but I can' t even imagine their universe is as meticulously fawned over as ours has been, but I can't sure of that. I'm by no means saying ours is a better fiction, but more globally beloved? Without question. That only happens when the fan base is strong enough. Star Trek's influence has been felt culturally

It hasn't escaped my noticed that 2017 (the debut of the new Star Trek) is 30 years from 1987 (the last time a new Star Trek debuted). :)

New Star Trek?!!! Have I been away from these boards for THAT long?!!!

What is this?

Please, please, please don't tell me it's related to that FanProd "Renegades"?

There's a new Trek series coming to CBS All Access (CBS's streaming service) in 2017.

I love that captain's log from Farpoint and thinking about it now in the context of a new series, there is a little bit of romanticism with it. I hope we get that sense of adventure in the new series.

Yeah, it was one hell of a run for all the formats, TV, movies, books, toys, and other collectibles. I don't think we'll ever see another one like it.

I'm glad I found this board so I can enjoy the buildup to the new series with everyone here. You're a great bunch of people :)

I am also glad I found this message board. I have not spoken to anyone bout Star Trek in over 10 years. I am far too afraid to try bringing it up to any of my friends or work colleagues.

I am really hoping the first episode of the new series is going to be more like Encounter at Farpoint (though perhaps not quite as cheesy) than the premiers of the following 3 series. I am really hoping it is going to primarily be about exploration, and am praying it won't have anything to do with time travel.

I'm with you. I'm probably one of the few people who would like it to be episodic. I do love serialised drama but episodic tv has its place too. I'd be happy to have planet of the week/dilemma of the week episodes as long as they're not remakes of previous Trek episodes.

I like McCoy's contribution to the beginning of TNG:

"Well this is a new ship. But she's got the right name. Now you remember that, you hear?"
"I will sir."
"You treat her like a lady and she'll always bring you home."

It's not a contest. But Star Trek inspired the invention of the cell phone and the tablet, and put a lot of real scientists, engineers and astronauts on their career track from an early age. Who knows, really, the extent of invention that can draw its germination back to Trek in some way? Not even mentioning the real social ramifications of exploring - not space, but an inclusive, optimistic, illuminated future.

Dr Who? Please. Where's our sonic screwdriver. Star Wars? Please. Toy bantha poop and hot laser death from above. Harry Potter? Giving kids all over the world - a stick.

Who's the big daddy?

Trek inspired Bill Gates, Steves Jobs & Woz, Linus Torvalds and all their pocket-protector-armed minions. Trek gave everyone a hand in creating better-reasoned societies. Even the first Space Shuttle was named after Trek's USS Enterprise.

They all owe the existence of Information Age fandom to Trek. Heck, it could even be argued no Trek, no Information Age as we know it.

But all of that is not Star Trek. Star Trek is just the most relevent-to-date fictional manifestation of...all of that genius at play.

It's not a contest. But to invoke cultural relevance, let alone fandom, without respect to Star Trek is base ignorance of one's own origins - in whatever vehicle that cruises the global, cultural superhighway carved out of the dark wild by Star Trek - and its fans.
