THE NEW REMASTERED BOX SETS

taintedarchive

Cadet
Newbie
I guess I'm a born again Trekkie - I've just bought all three seasons of the original series in the new remastered box sets (the metal tins they come in are brilliant). And am watching the entire things episode by episode - up to Mudd's Women which I watched an hour ago and enjoyed fully.

Sounds like a great experience! I've only watched two remastered episodes -- "Balance of Terror" and "The Cage." One of these days, I'll purchase the Blu Ray box sets.

Have they re-mastered the Gorn from Arena?

Yes - the gorn can now blink which gives it slightly less a man in a suit look. There's a good documentary on the first disc of season one that does a split screen comparison with the remastered version and the regular version - there are some nice tweaks and the enterprise in space has never looked better.

To get both the original and remastered versions, you need to buy the Blu-Ray set, correct?

REMASTERED BOX SETS review

Den of Geek has a review up on them.

Season 3's DVD set includes two cuts of Star Trek's unaired pilot episode, The Cage - both the original and an extended version. While The Cage is largely interesting only as a historical relic, with both footage and events of the episode worked into season 1's The Menagerie Parts I & II, it is gratifying to see it included somewhere.

Eh, more ragging on season 3. I've been watching this season for the first time this week, but "Spock's Brain" and "This Way to Eden" do not a bad season make.

Thanks for the Denofgeek link, their episode reviews are really great.

I've got TOS on DVD already.

I'm trying to decide if I should get TOS-R or not.

I saw some of it on Sci-Fi as they were coming out, and the new effects are impressive and cool and all, but I'm not sure if it's "worth buying" the series over again.

So if you buy the TOSR sets that are only in standard def, you don't get the original versions?!?!

I had the original season one, but picked up season 2 in re-mastered format (because it's cheaper and comes in a cool tin).

I'm over half-way through the season and really enjoying it. Some of the re-mastering is obvious (flames shooting out of the dommsday machine's maw, for instance), but it's fairly unobtrusive for the most part. Was the little periscope coming up for Sulu in one of the episodes added in later? I'm pretty sure that wouldn't have happened originally.

Overall I've enjoyed it so far. I even liked Friday's Child and The Apple! I think I'll skip The Omega Glory though.

I have just acquired the Remastered Box Sets and have to say I am blown away by what they have done.

By that, I mean, most of the affects are background and you hardly notice it. It is not "in your face" style of CGI add-ons like the Special Edition Star Wars was.

It feels like I am watching TOS for the first time again. I would recommend this sit to anyone, even people who already own a previous edition of TOS.

Hey welcome to the TOS forum felyxz! I'm glad you're enjoying them.

I watched a couple of episodes the other night when a friend got the boxset - I will say that the prints of the original film look just INCREDIBLE. They look even sharper than the 2004 releases. The colours seem a bit different though.

The transitions from 60's film to 200x CGI just don't work for me at all, unfortunately. With the greatest respect to the CGI artists, I don't think they quite pulled it off. Apparently there were severe time pressures or something.

gastrof - here in Australia, the originals are not included on the remastered sets in DVD format.

I saw these the other day and thought "Cool". Then I saw the price tag and thought a few things about Paramount and the price we're charged for DVDs in this country that I probably shouldn't repeat here.

I'll more than likely be getting them when they're more sensibly priced. :bolian:

There are only half a dozen good episodes IIRC, and Spock's Brain is one of them. For me, TOS gets worse each year. Season 1 is just about the best season of any Star Trek - only The Alternative Factor is a miss. Season 2 is a bit more hard going, with Catspaw, The Omega Glory, Who Mourns for Adonais, Patterns of Force and a few others falling very flat.

Should be presented in all formats alongside the original work or not at all.

But I already have the original three seasons on DVD, bought years ago in neato plastic canisters. I'm glad I could now supplement my collection with the CGI DVD sets - without having twice as many discs in the tins, duplicating what I already have. My season sets now number six seasons for TOS, plus one for TAS. Finally it's seven sets, just like TNG, DS9 and VOY!

It's the first release for either version on Blu-Ray, and the technology allows both versions to be on half the number of discs. So it's right that Blu-Ray has both versions.

Correct. Bastards.

Agreed.

Indeed. I'd very much like to get them. I have the original releases (and paid about $120 for each season).

I'd love to get my hands on these so I'd have the option of watching original or remastered but... Hasn't Paramount got enough of my money already? And Blu-Ray. Don't they know some of us, probably most of us don't buy Blu-Ray?

In fact, of all my friends, I only know of one that does buy Blu-Ray. Still normal DVDs for the rest of us.
