The Motion Picture

I was just watching episode 7 of SPACE 1999, Voyagers return. The stumble across Voyager one, which has become dangerous and is killing all life in its path.

Was the story for the Motion Picture influenced by this in anyway? Thank-you.

Never saw Space 1999, but I can tell you that the plot for TMP is lifted from an episode of the original series titled 'The Changeling', in which an Earth probe called Nomad returns and yeah, starts removing the 'imperfect human infestation'. Perhaps the S:1999 episode was influenced by the same episode as the movie?

And TMP is also based on the "ST: Phase II" telemovie, "In Thy Image", which featured N'sa (ie. NASA) seeking its creator, which in turn was based upon an unfilmed script called "Robot's Return", which was awaiting a greenlight on a TV series being made from the "Genesis II" pilot telemovie.

An Earth space probe also appeared in a "Six Million Dollar Man" episode, "Death Probe", and its sequel, "Return Of Death Probe".

And the "Robot's Return" premise from Genesis II predated Space: 1999 by a few years. Given that space probes were big news in the '60s and '70s, it's not remotely implausible that multiple creators would've independently thought, "What would happen if one of those probes encountered aliens?"

If you see a similarity between two TV or movie plots from roughly the same era, it's immeasurably more probable that they were both influenced by the same earlier source or current event than it is that one was copied from the other.

I am sure any similarities are sheer coincidence in this case. 1999 was written in the UK and I don't think anyone even knew about "Robot's Return" until it might have been written about in Starlog much later than when 1999 was going before cameras...

If I remember correctly Deep Impact and Armageddon both came out the same year, probably inspired by Shoe-Maker Levy or Hale-Bopp which happened just a few years before.
