The Motion Picture

Captain Zog

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
Anyone else here think this movie is an absolute gem. A tad slow, sure. Lacking in the area of action, quite. But the visuals, the music, the 70s post-Star Wars style, the sense of wonder. Another really underappreciated piece of cinematic Trek.

Well, it's certainly not as bad as STV, Insurrection, or Nemesis, but it's probably only my fifth-favorite movie or so. I consistently put II-IV and VI ahead of it, probably tying it with Generations, I guess.

I do think it was a bold and interesting aesthetic change, and one which seems to fit better with the first two seasons of TNG than anything else. That's not really a criticism, just an observation.

As long as you are not referring to the DE. It is the best. I would love a widescreen version of the SLV with the scaffolding screen corrected and use the DE version of the wingwalk and it would be perfect.

The DE's wingwalk is a snooze-fest when it comes to colour.

The original may have been laughably bad, but it at least had strong shades of blue and something nice to look at, compared to the shades of grey (hoho) that were in the DE.

You're right the DE version needed a little bit more color. But that really bad out of proportion matte of the Enpterprise is so jarring.

Just watched this last week and I was struck by how much closer it "felt" to the original Star Trek than just about any of the other movies. It was very much inspired by 2001 and I think it was the "smartest" of the Star Trek films.

And for the record, I was very pleased with the DE. I don't know why anyone would prefer the theatrical cut of the extended edition.

For me it is two very big reasons: the soundmix and cut lines or part of lines. Give me the DE visuals (except put back the view of astrogator during the launch and the original view of Vulcan) and the soundmix of the SLV (except add the music when the Ilia probe is first found) and it would be perfect for me.

It's the only one of the films that I can watch without rolling my eyes. It's flawed, yes, but it's Star Trek to me in the way that nothing after it was.

I've been watching TMP for 29 years this month and it just gets better with age. I think that, while still flawed, the DE is the best version so far. Call me a loon, but I hold TMP up near 2001 as a "serious" science fiction film, and as a serious film in general. My copy doesn't reside on the same shelf with the other Trek films of other general sci-fi. It's up on the top shelf with Ben-Hur, 2001, Apocalypse Now, Lawrence of Arabia, etc. The concept that a higher level can't be attained through knowledge or logic alone, but with human imagination and determination is still such a fantastic idea. It's a pity that the original cut of the film never featured the climax of the 'B' story (Spock's journey) as it folds so well into the 'A' story just ahead of the final act. (the 'tear' scene) With a bit more tuning, or maybe a remake, this film could be perfect.

Yeah, this is the most appropriate place to complain about Abrams' movie! Yeah, go for it!

It's a smart high-concept film that doesn't get near the credit it deserves. I'm often amazed by people who rank it below garbage like Insurrection.
