Game The Most Disliked First Trek Episode (or Movie) Of The Year

Oops I might have gotten confused with episode titles thinking it was later in the season.

The curse of streaming Trek and season-long plots, and forgetting what happens where. ;)

And "Chosen Realm" wins! I was actually rooting for "Despite Yourself", which I like much of, but I cannot forgive it for that Culber death. Even though he came back to life, I still consider that the ugliest Kill Your Gays story I've ever seen. I've certainly never felt so personally upset about one.

It still amazes me that the gay showrunner at the time gave all those interviews saying -- this is not a kill your gays story, I am a gay writer and I could never put fourth such a thing.

Yet it remains my personal Kill Your Gays lowpoint, for, like, all filmed entertainment I have ever seen. It's interesting when the writers intent is disconnected from the results to such an extreme extent.

And as we sometimes do at the end of games -- SNAP MINI-GAME. I was inspired by the fact that this thread indirectly got me to watch "Firstborn" the other day for the first time in forever (way better than I remembered!) and @Vger23 's mentions of James Sloyan on page one of this thread.

THE MOST DISLIKED JAMES SLOYAN GUEST SPOT
TNG, Season 3: "The Defector" (Admiral Jarok)
TNG, Season 7: "Firstborn" (K'mtar/Alexander)
DS9, Season 2: "The Alternate" (Dr. Mora Pol)
DS9, Season 5: "The Begotten" (Dr. Mora Pol)
VOY, Season 1: "Jetrel" (Jetrel)

And I'm going to let my recency bias carry me and save "Firstborn." Yes, the cheesy Ren Faire Klingon festival is inexcusable. But I was actually kind of thrilled to rediscover that this ep had Lursa, B'Etor, and Quark, that was a fun "surprise."

It is interesting that this ep establishes a pregnancy for one of the sisters right before they die in "Generations." Did she give birth to the kid first?!?

I also feel much more charitably disposed to Brian Bonsall these days, now that my adult working life has involved me casting child actors for roles that require facial prosthetics, and the experience has me thinking prosthetic acting for minors should be illegal.

TNG, Season 3: "The Defector" (Admiral Jarok)
DS9, Season 2: "The Alternate" (Dr. Mora Pol)
DS9, Season 5: "The Begotten" (Dr. Mora Pol)
VOY, Season 1: "Jetrel" (Jetrel)

Saving "The Defector".

Tight script, great plot and twists... among Ronald D. Moore's best, and this was I believe only his second episode in the franchise.

DS9, Season 2: "The Alternate" (Dr. Mora Pol)
DS9, Season 5: "The Begotten" (Dr. Mora Pol)
VOY, Season 1: "Jetrel" (Jetrel)

James Sloyan has played a few great roles in many memorable episodes.

I'll save Jetrel because the last time I saw it during The Great Rewatch, I'd forgotten how poignant it was. He and Ethan Philips knocked it out of the park.

DS9, Season 2: "The Alternate" (Dr. Mora Pol)
DS9, Season 5: "The Begotten" (Dr. Mora Pol)[

What's funny is that I told Sakonna that I predicted "Firstborn" would win, and "THE ALTERNATE" will be next to last.

Or, in this case, it was the alternate 'win'.

I would have leaned towards Firstborn myself, though having rewatched it recently Alexander is strangely tolerable through.

There is no loser. :D

Yes, it strongly depends on the pre-selection of course (the smaller the sample, the higher the odds of variability). If we did a 'most disliked universally acclaimed Star Trek classic' the 'winner' probably would still be pretty good, and if we did a 'most liked universally reviled Star Trek episode', the first one eliminated would probably still be pretty bad. This actor apparently had the luck to appear in a limited number of well-liked episodes, even though his own acting would have contributed to that in no small part, of course.
