Game The Most Disliked First Trek Episode (or Movie) Of The Year

Sakonna

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
THE OBJECTIVE: A sudden-death elimination game in which we remove our personal favorite episodes/movies from a themed list, until we arrive at the episode that is, if not the worst, at least the most disliked. :bolian:

THE RULES
: Below is a list of TOS, TAS, TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT, DIS, ST, & PRO episodes, plus movies, that were the first Trek releases of the calendar year they came out in (sometimes the only Trek release of the year they came out in).

Eliminate/save your favorite, or the one you deem the ‘best.’
Post something you love about the episode you are saving, and copy-and-paste the list with your choice removed.

You can use any standard you like to judge which option is "best." You can save episodes for being widely recognized “best Trek” classics, or for idiosyncratic qualities that no one appreciates but you.

As you get down the list, you might have to reach more and more for something to love about an episode, and it's OK to eventually save episodes for being "less bad" if there's nothing left you truly love. :bolian:

But -- no tactical voting! You cannot remove an episode because you don’t think anyone else will, or because you feel it would threaten your preferred episode's chance to “win.”

You can take multiple turns. Leave at least 2 eliminations by other posters before you eliminate another episode.

New players are always welcome, you do not have to already be a "most disliked game" regular to dive in.

Much thanks and credit to @Farscape One for helping me vet the list.

Enjoy!

I'm going to surprise myself and start by saving "The Vulcan Hello." All sorts of things are wrong with it (though I'm a Disco fan and think they've totally figured that show out, after the early bumps), but watching it the first time was truly a religious experience. It was just so thrilling to have Trek back on TV.

That cast was also so top notch right out of the box, too.

Oh...fun!

I'm removing 6/4/82: Feature, "Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan"

I'd give a rationale, but I think the merits and impact that this part of Star Trek has had on the franchise have been pretty well-documented at this point.

Following on from Vger23's save, I'm going with 6/1/84: Feature, "Star Trek III: The Search For Spock" - My favourite Trek film! I love it for the character work, the worldbuilding, and music (amongst many other things). It also introduced my favourite starships - Oberth and Excelsior.

There are a lot of really good ones on this list...but I'm going to save 1/1/90: TNG, "The Defector" next. This episode doesn't get a lot of recognition, but it is honestly in my top 5 TNG outings. It has a tense brinkmanship backdrop to what is really a very personal and intimate character study of Jarok, who is brilliantly protrayed by James Sloyan. It's an awesome hour of Star Trek, It hit all the right emotional and intellectual notes, and as I said, is one of my absolute favorites.

I will continue saving pilots and go with DS9 "Emissary."

What a rich world DS9 was right from the jump! I love how they start it with dumping this huge pile of fascinating elements out on the table, then working out where it was all going to go as they went along. So many shows today are overdetermined and preplanned. I wish we had more shows in the DS9 style, where they just put a lot of interesting characters in a fascinating situation and then let the overall story grow organically. I love the confidence behind that kind of TV storytelling. They know they'll make it work!

Ok, I'm going with 12/7/79: Feature, "Star Trek: The Motion Picture"

I was not even old enough to see it in the theater when it premiered, but I have distinct and accurate memories of my parents letting me stay up and watch it for its premier on HBO when I was a little older. Despite some flaws, it's a great Star Trek outing on the silver screen that looks and feels like a real cinematic event, and I genuinely love the character arcs for Kirk and Spock that take place.

Not necessarily the best of the bunch -there are a few very nice ones still in the list-, but simply an episode I liked well enough to eliminate now. A fun rehash of some situations during the Voyager years and how crew relations changed over time.

I seem to like 9/28/87: TNG, "Encounter At Farpoint" more than is common in fandom. I think it's a very effective pilot episode. At the time, it visually blew away anything else on television. It was obviously well-cast and it had a very "Star Trek" story to launch the franchise into a new era. A cameo by Admiral MCCoy doesn't hurt either.

This is recency bias at work, but I did not rewatch "New Ground" for decades, and I recently checked it out again and was totally charmed by it. It might just be that after not seeing it for so long, it felt like the thrill of discovering a "new" episode. Or maybe after years of Michael Dorn saying in interviews that the most interesting part about Worf was his tortured relationship to fatherhood, maybe he convinced me? But right now I'm high on it.

Maybe I'll even do something REALLY crazy next, like rewatch "Firstborn."
Edit: I'm doing it, "Firstborn" is on right now!

Hmmm... I'm going with a "what would I like to watch now?" method of choosing, and it's DS9, "Prodigal Daughter" that tops the list for me. I thought Ezri was a much needed breath of fresh air, and I really enjoyed meeting her dysfunctional family (poor Norvo) in a 'soap opera' type story. Cool house, too!

I'll take PRO's Kobayashi off the list as it's one of my favourite episodes they've done so far. Odo's 'Hympth!' has had me in stitches each time I've watched.

It's a nice way of showcasing the characters we've lost over the years, too.

@Seven of Five beat me to the punch with "Kobyashi," so my next pick will be somewhat unorthodox. I'm taking down 1/9/20: ST, "Children Of Mars"

I don't know...something about the way it was done...it just hits right for me. It evokes the emotions of the day I saw the Challenger explode on live TV in my classroom, or seeing 9/11/2001 unfold, and realizing in those moments that innocence was lost and that there are bigger "problems" in the world than the petty stuff that I may have been battling at the time.

Really well done, for a short.

I love that one too, my favorite Prodigy. I hope they are able to update the tribute title card at the end to include Nichelle Nichols, now that she has also passed. I see why it was kind of a tricky decision, but I wish they had included her from the beginning.

Saving 9/8/66: TOS, "The Man Trap". I love it: from the alien costume that's aged quite badly to the very sci-fi concept of salt vampires.

"ENT, "Daedalus" is next on my list of "What would I like to watch now?" It may not be the best of Enterprise, but I found it suitably creepy (the transporter "ghost" yes, but not its rubbish 'plastic surgery' on that hapless guard), with some great acting and guest stars. Plus, I have a soft spot for it because this is the episode from which the basis of Archer and Danica's relationship in Christopher L. Bennett's Rise of the Federation novels came from!
