Wow! This is a loooonnng list. I'm usually terribly indecisive at choosing anything, but 3 or 4 of these stood out immediately. My first save is "The Search For Spock", and not just because it's my favourite ST film. I'm saving TSFS because of the family members Sarek and David. Particularly for Sarek's "faulty logic where his son's concerned" - both the emotional mind meld with Kirk at the beginning, instigated because he's made an illogical(?) assumption, and the exchange with T'Lar at the fal-tor-pan ceremony on that magnificent Mount Seleya set at the end. While I didn't like David's part in this as much as I did in TWOK, it still serves to contribute to Kirk's ongoing story.

P. S. @Sakonna, shouldn't "The Voyage Home" be on this list due to Amanda's and Sarek's appearances?

I am going to make my first save "A Fistful Of Datas", for sentimental reasons. Trek fandom is widespread in my family, and this happened to be the last episode I watched with one of them before they unexpectedly passed away, so it carries a special poignancy for me now. Especially that beautiful final shot of the ship riding into the sunset...

P. S. @Sakonna, shouldn't "The Voyage Home" be on this list due to Amanda's and Sarek's appearances?

As long as the list is, there were definitely even more that could have gone on. There's some appearances of Sarek & Amanda on Discovery that are left off as well -- because of the size of the topic, there was more subjectivity than usual in this one. For the family characters we see many times, we were trying to let the guide be: is a substantial story of the episode/movie about the family relationship, or are the family scenes used to accent a story about something else? It seemed to me that TWOK and TSOS were substantially about David being Kirk's son, and TFF was substantially about Sybok being Spock's brother, whereas Sarek and Amanda were more just used as accent characters in TVH. That being said, now that you ask, I can also see the argument for the emotional weight of those scenes meriting it's inclusion. Just because of the length of the list already, I'd rather leave it off this run of the game (and we know it's liked enough to never make it to the end), but maybe the next iteration, or perhaps this will be revised into smaller lists of specifically sibling and specifically parent/child episodes for the next run (the first play of any list always feels like a bit of an experiment )

I just have to praise "Family" as well, this was such a delightful episode to rediscover as an adult. As a child it just booooooored me to tears and I dragged myself thru it out of Trek fan duty, but now I can see it is FANTASTIC. I'm so glad it exists.

When exploring Kirk's family, it was either siblings, offspring, and/or diseases... since there was no way Trek would cover the latter...

TOS Feature: “Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan”​

TWOK is loaded with families. Khan married McGivers, whose name cannot be said onscreen cuz of royalty reasons. Wasn't Joaquim (perennial Trek and sci-fi actor Judson Scott portraying) their offspring?

Kirk meets an old lover he'd gotten real lucky and hit the jackpot with - Carol Marcus. There's some great character exploration between the two, and their son...

For which the extended cut gives a bit more detail into David, as I recall. I liked his cardigan as well. Like Mr Rogers only more natural in feel and sartorial visage. The creation of David, for narrative rather than "oingy boingy" reasons, is rather nicely done - for both the theme of growing old and mortality, but setting up progeny - who also isn't following in daddy's footsteps. Of which there is nothing wrong in that and it's a good thing, but it's nowhere near as often when junior doesn't follow in father's footsteps so this is nice to see.

Okay, Kirk and Carol are estranged - which is actually disheartening and often not mentioned by certain youtube factions. Trek was never a utopia when people like David Marcus grew up effectively without a father, never mind what the bridge crew of the 1701-D went through (but noting how they made their own real family and stuck by each other because a family is a complex but noble thing.) But Trek was never a dystopia since David was able to grow up and do his own thing like everyone else could.

The theme of cynicism is also familial with post-60s Trek, Note the scientists of Regula II spitting incessantly about how the project will be turned into a weapon by the military (and continued into the 80s movies as part of a larger running soft arc as Klingons assumed it was just a weapon, which was an incorrect assertion on their part but that's another movie.)

Until NEM, this movie was the most brutal of all the Trek films. What's worse - Khan running around crazed with a butcher knife and making thinly-sliced pork loins out of the staff? Or abducting junior Chekov along with proverbial stepdad Captain Terrell and torturing them with some earworms (and not of the horrific B-52s sort). And may I say, Paul Winfield rocks the house as the soft-spoken but engaging captain, in true 23rd century fashion of beaming on down into any dangerous situation (unlike TNG, at least until Stewart demanded they use his character more - at which point he became a shiny happy Borg, but I digress again... )

This movie does make some 4th wall winks to Moby Dick and other classical references, since it wasn't going to refer to them in the end credits where people have left the theater or are in the back rows finishing up on whatever. Except TWOK was engaging from start to finish. I hate 4th wall jokes. They're not clever unless they're in a sitcom, which might be why I adore "The Nanny" (long before "Family Guy" started, Fran was doing the same thing. Both have their fun points, though!)

Kirk and Khan could even have been spiritual siblings if there wasn't that rivalry going on. As to who's most responsible, it's neither here nor there as it could go either way. and both shared some culpability. (Kirk and thus Starfleet didn't follow up on a promise but Khan shouldn't have tried to commandeer the Enterprise to begin with.)

Also, the dogfights - both of them - are familial! They're intimate. That's what makes a good fight work. Seeing 1000 ships in space pew pew one another stopped being engaging after 1980, and even then those were not drawn out and those still had enough dramatic weight to do the real work of the story - which isn't easy to do, but before I digress: TWOK puts in the intimacy into everything and the result is intensely gripping and in ways a zillion pew-pews can't even begin to do. STFC is a prime example of how massive pew-pews for pew-pew effect is just a load of pew.

Especially after seeing the new 1701 in TMP in its size and scale and scope and how it is a character as well - this only adds to the tangibility of Khan's rampage.

Spock... who didn't want to return but changed his tune happily because he could be killed off. Leaked by a Roddenberry who is a virtual Khan surrogate for behind-the-scenes development problems in this case, the story had to be rewritten with a big red herring to throw people off - hence the Kobyashi Maru scenario, which does beg a couple questions but forget that because it's done so flipping well that the nitpicks don't bog down the suspension of disbelief. Yes, it's a cheat. Yes, this doesn't happen in real life. Yes, this is its own fictional universe with its own rules and in this universe they do use real officers, retired or not, to help trainees and cadets with and there's no nitpick that breaks the suspension of disbelief.

But he dies, we see the opening between panes of glass that comprise the radiation chamber, we get the iconic scene of Spock ramming his mind inside McCoy's somehow but nobody knew if he was just planting in some needed facts before snuffing it or what so it's still not the biggest of all surprises (TSFS's movie teaser sorts spoils all those... )

Saavik - a scene was cut that reveals her being half-Romulan and half-Vulcan. This explains why she coolly expresses a heated expletive. Though there are other possible reasons now possible thanks to that scene being jettisoned and thus de-canonized (cannonized? ).

Naturally, we get the Big Three scene in Kirk's quarters about the implications of the device. Spock is dispassionate and appearing uncaring and up to any number of diagnoses worthy of DSM-V. McCoy, as a result, is predictably over-the-top emotional and is equally up to getting diagnosed from the same DSM-V manual. It's a must-see scene. Especially the Director's Cut scene when Spock tells Kirk via McCoy not to sleep with everyone, as Kirk breaks up his adopted toddlers' infighting-in-the-sandbox at just the right time!

(It's also the first big,. noteworthy use of CGI in a movie. Nowadays Terragen could do most of the same on your $300 computer and take the same amount of time to render on it - several weeks, but that's beside the point.)

Also, KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN! Notice not just the shout but the setup and payoff to it. This is a great scene, which cannot be cut and pasted into any other format without a thought. But without digressing (sorry to disappoint), let's look at this: Kirk and crew beam on down knowing full well their backup plan. which they spell outright knowing Khan is listening in except he's not the median movie goer, which isn't as familiar with all this. This little scenario is a double-edged sword. It continues the interwoven theme of the Kobiyashi Maru (TWOK has several themes nimbly repeating themselves in satisfying ways) and how Kirk tries to think of everything ahead of time. Kirk's yell works at the time but doesn't work once you realize he planned this and Kirk's yell doesn't begin to hint at acting. Unless he had... and that's when--

--the Mutara Nebula scenes really kick in because, with all scanning and tactical and shields being down, they can't even think and each has an equal opportunity to smatter the other. And this leads to a dogfight that one-ups the previous one, not because of the coolness of a ship hijacking (and a lesser-powered one at that) and not because this is where the story turns and pops off Spock for real... but because we're so engrossed in the fight and knowing Khan could win if random chance works in his favor. And this time around, Kirk doesn't get lucky...

Note that a starship and nebula mutate into a planet - "Mutara" is a big plot developmen hidden in plain sight. It also adds perfect continuity into TSFS, which promptly forgets this as it becomes a "let's pile on the kid for using an unstable substance even though his testing would have worked on a genuine planet and not unknown variables like a giant gas cloud in space combined with a radiation-emitting starship with electrical power and blinky lights and boom-boom torpedos and other things not found on lifeless rocks in space... oops, digressed I just did. If TSFS is in this movie, I'll lay into this one later, probably... oh wait, can't, too late. Glad to see TSFS saved, it is an underrated movie... but that "Saavik nags David" scene is so mind-bogglingly unwarranted except for chasing after cod drama with over the top shtick of "every renowned scientist has reviled, blah blah blah"... )

And in another cut scene, albeit with photographic evidence, there's a baby wandering around in the transporter room of Reliant Given all the other bloodshed, they opted to throw out the dirty bathwater of this scene with baby included? Lame. (both cutting the scene and that silly attempt at levity. Especially as little baby junior is one of the other not-mentioned ingredients in making the doomed Genesis Planet I whined about incessantly in the previous paragraph and for all we know, the baby's additional mass on top of the remainder of Khan and his crew was just enough organic glop to have been the catalyst to have caused the instability... )

As long as the list is, there were definitely even more that could have gone on. There's some appearances of Sarek & Amanda on Discovery that are left off as well -- because of the size of the topic, there was more subjectivity than usual in this one. For the family characters we see many times, we were trying to let the guide be: is a substantial story of the episode/movie about the family relationship, or are the family scenes used to accent a story about something else? It seemed to me that TWOK and TSOS were substantially about David being Kirk's son, and TFF was substantially about Sybok being Spock's brother, whereas Sarek and Amanda were more just used as accent characters in TVH. That being said, now that you ask, I can also see the argument for the emotional weight of those scenes meriting it's inclusion. Just because of the length of the list already, I'd rather leave it off this run of the game (and we know it's liked enough to never make it to the end), but maybe the next iteration, or perhaps this will be revised into smaller lists of specifically sibling and specifically parent/child episodes for the next run (the first play of any list always feels like a bit of an experiment )

- Ah, that makes sense. TBH, I don't think I could've coped with even more choice . Although... I do like Amanda's "being human" speech to Spock at the beginning of TVH (and her frock!).

Anyway, on to the next save: ENT: "Similitude" (which just pips a DS9 ep to the post - probably because I rewatched it recently). The teaser was a bit of a gut-punch when I first saw this years ago, but it soon became clear there was going to be another Trip. I loved that Sim opened T'Pol's eyes to her own feelings for Trip, and I liked his relationship with Phlox (although I would have liked to have seen more of that). I also appreciated the reasons why Archer decided to sacrifice Sim for Trip, and that Sim ultimately chose to go along with it.
Although, just imagine if the op on Sim could've been carried out without killing him - two Trips

I'll next save "In Purgatory's Shadow" -- as deathbed scenes go, that one for Tain is hard to beat! The Dukat/Ziyal/Garak thing is surprisingly effective, as well. This script on the whole is just really good -- smoothly plotted, fabulous dialogue, it's all there.

This episode is a good example of acting, direction, and incidental music elevating an uneven storyline.

Brent Spiner obviously steals the show and adds a lot of menace with aplomb. Which is necessary since it's planned around Data and as far as Data plans go, make it unlimited!

over that hideous punny wordplay.

The direction of this, especially the lighting of lore in some key scenes, is spectacular for newcomer Rob Bowman.

First off, I'm getting this nitnosepick out of the way: Being season 1 and its sheer complement of hit-and-miss scripts, I had read (and I sadly don't remember where from) that he and Spiner kept in the final scene where Data uses a contraction in deliberately. (And nobody reacted because, oops, they threw out the wrong android!) This makes an iffy script that much worse on screen, especially as the rest of the bridge crew actors don't break character! As with most of the cast believing the show would not make it to a second year (Datalore was in the original 13-commissioned scripts), it's not hard to see why Bowman and Spiner would do that. Knowing all this helps whereas I originally thought the episode was poorly made and they used the wrong take. Is it still the best thing to do? No. But noting how many scenes in this story are so poorly scripted - Wesley boosted by making all the adults a bunch of nincompoops...

Also consider: This was before season 3 when it was decided Data was an android and not a digital analogue of Pinocchio. Knowing that, the use of contraction could have been made as a bona fide joke - again, a slight rewrite would be all that was needed but then later episodses would not get to do "Data's growth" in the same way and his lack of contractions added to the charm...

But ignoring the first draft nature of this story, let's take a look at what works:

Lore is an encyclopedic definition of "sadism". What's on paper is already robust in many scenes, but the direction and acting just embraces all this and goes oink wild and that more than compensates for anything else on paper that would otherwise grind the episode to a halt, then into reverse gear and stripping the entire transmission along the way. But I digress. "Dear brother", spits Lore... Lore kicking the shit out of Data's head and in a way that the audience responds as if Data were a fleshy and bloody human being - this stuff gets to the corfe. Lore beating the stuffing out of Worf.

Brent really sells this to the core and then some. It is often said actors prefer playing villains because you can't do nasty things in real life. I disagree. It is a challenge to sell the doing of nasty things authentically on screen and it takes a good actor steeped in range to make it all look natural and convincing. And Brent in TNG pretty much proves he has a hell of a range. If not Night Court and other shows prior to TNG but TNG is the icing on the cake for sure. The suspension of disbelief is maintained so many times, when a poorer level production would let it all shatter to pieces instantly. This was indeed an episode well-saved.

Ron Jones has a knack of looking into any scene of any story and pulling from it that feels so natural that it's second nature. Only one exception ever existed, and even then it still had the theme of the episode's remaining music but all that is another story. I usually do not like it when visceral elements have to be hyped up to compensate for a poor story, but when the music works and - again - Jones knows how to look at any muck and make gold from it, the result is phenomenal.

And, yeah, the basic story isn't that bad - Data has an evil twin, like how KITT had KARR. Only Lore is not amoral but decidedly evil and an android like Data or Lore could easily take over the ship (note that Data also happens do so with ease in "Brothers"). Spiner can do villainy exemplary well but Lore's dialogue in so many scenes is legitimately worthy of half a dozen awards times three...

The Crystalline Entity is a nod to 60s Trek while creating something original in the process. It does beg numerous questions - about how it can travel FTL, is it a naturally occurring thing or was it engineered (which then can tie into how fast it can travel), how did Lore communicate with it with the ship's computer and clearly not in the way that was devised in its return episode "Silicon Avatar" (which was clever for other reasons)... and would Enterprise lower its shields before zapping off a limb to beam in?

I can only gush so much at how well the episode is despite its chunky moments of clunk, so here's a visual complement that shows the good stuff better than I could begin to tell:

The direction, the lighting, the camera angles, the senses of claustrophobia and menace - all of it! These scenes alone exemplify how effing awesome the staff and cast on board were and that is why this show got renewed despite all the speed bumps and hurdles it drunkenly tripped over.

Not to mention the interesting use of a mirror in Data's cabin being used to great effect and not just becuase Lore is Data's mirror image.

Shame the video clip montage lacked Data pummeling Worf but the material already sells how grabbing it all truly is.

The acting in this is fairly excellent all-around. Especially in dealing with Wesley - who is in true season 1 character, and Wil - not being as experienced - has to deal with some first draft scripting which couldn't be helped. Another rewrite would have polished a lot in this script. Indeed, look at how Wesley steps backwards in fear of Lore and later with the clips shown afterward where he, Data, Lore, and Beverly are together. Wil was nailing it in those scenes, so he was not miscast and is nowhere near a bad actor, but he had to deal with some schlocky dialogue. And "Datalore" shows - eh - the best of both worlds in terms of clunky and solid dialogue.

Saving Homefront. This is one of the few multi-generational outlooks on family in the series. Of course, it has the normal reparte between Sisko and Jake--always a strength in the series. Brock Peters' Joseph Sisko is amazing, showing mature family relations. Not to mention, Joe gets a kick-ass speech.

All great reasons and savings previously, but I have to give a special shouut out to the end shot of "A Fistful of Datas". That was the most beautiful shot of that ship ever made.

My next save is "EXPLORERS".

One of the best scenes of Bashir and O'Brien as O'Brien says 'I love you, man' without actually saying it. So realistic, as male friendships are.

But saving this especially because of the Siskos. A wonderful father/son outing. Ben Sisko is the prototype of a great dad, and one of the big reasons why he is my favorite captain.

I'm going to save: DIS Season 2: “If Memory Serves”

As an old TOS fan, I really enjoyed the way the episode expanded on the events from the TOS 1st pilot "The Cage" and hell even the events in TOS S1: "The Menagerie" make more sense in that over the years the only thing that never made sense in "The Menagerie" was HOW did Spock get in contact with "The Keeper" because in "The Cage", Spock never directly spoke to, or ever interacted with The Keeper. It was Pike, Number One, and Yeoman Colt.

I also loved the nods and callbacks probably only old original fans like myself would notice; as well as how it expanded on the characters of Spock and Pike and Vina. Overall, it's been an episode of the Star Trek franchise that I've enjoyed as much as some of my favorite old TOS episodes. (TOS is still #1 IMO )

Well I thought I was prepared to join in........but alas I misunderstood.

 

[Seven of Five]

There are so many good episodes to choose from that I'm truly spoilt for choice.

I'll go with The Die is Cast, with the excellent dialogue with Tain and Garak. I love seeing him finally seeing how he feels like he belongs at Tain's side, despite us all seeing how dangerous it is.

The whole episode is a tense build-up to war between the Tal Shiar/Obsidian Order and the Dominion, only for it to backfire severely. The Defiant coming in to save the day was a great fist bump moment as well, and that whole battle hada lot of energy.

As soon as I saw Star Trek on this list, I knew I was going to vote for it. Not because I think it's the best presentation on the list (which I don't). Not because of the touching dialogue while Jim Kirk was being born, and his dad was busy heroically sacrificing. Not because of the scenes of young Spock on Vulcan. For a single line of dialogue:

SAREK: You asked me once why I married your mother. I married her because I loved her.

I'm not crying -- you're crying.

I waited decades to hear Sarek say that line. And it was worth it!
