The Most Disliked Episode of VOY, 2023 Edition - Season 3...

Farscape One

Admiral
Admiral
Welcome to our bi-yearly 'Most Disliked Episode' games! Now that the 'Least Disliked Episode' games hosted by BlueStuff (who inspired me to create these games, so thank you very much for paving the way) have concluded, we can begin the opposite side of that coin.

Here's the game. The basic idea is your standard elimination game. I'll provide a list of the episodes for each season and you need to eliminate your most favorite or the one you deem the 'best.' Please provide an EXPLANATION for why you are eliminating your choice and be sure to copy and paste the list with your choice removed. Finally, leave at least 2 eliminations by other posters before you eliminate another episode.

No tactical voting! You cannot remove an episode because you feel they would threaten your preferred episode's chance to win. Pretty simple. Enjoy!

I'm going to be perfectly honest... season 3 of VOYAGER is a lot of mediocre in the middle. I feel it's the weakest season of the series. The best is the first 5 produced ones and the last 6, in my opinion. Which is basically where I'm going to get most of my saves.

So it should be no surprise that my first save this season is the last episode, "SCORPION".

This was VOYAGER's best season finale by far. The teaser left your jaw dropped when a couple shots completely destroys TWO Borg cubes. There was tension throughout the whole episode. It was fast paced. And we had John Rhys-Davies!

But possibly the best scene of the episode was actually centered on one of the show's most underused characters... Chakotay. While I do agree there were times in later seasons when it seems like he was phoning it in, I disagree that it was because he was a bad actor. The scene where he actually disagrees with Janeway and tells her the scorpion story proves it. It's sad that almost all of his character development stops at this point because he had some good stuff in the early years. Except for "EQUINOX, PART II", he completely became a 'Yes man', which not only stripped him of any bite as a former Maquis, but also as a believable first officer who was a former Maquis and captain.

That summer was double hell waiting for the new season, because DS9's "CALL TO ARMS" aired at this time, too. STAR TREK was fully on point for season finales that year.

It's the best we'll get for playing out "Fed vs Maquis":

"WORST CASE SCENARIO"

It does get silly toward the end with the holodeck fluff, but it does start out great and the twist of interactive novel early on was not expected.

And then there's this:

Nice use of the EMH being a hologram, something the writers remembered but the characters forgot! :luvlove:

Saving "Remember." A terrific B'Elanna episode with an important theme, played out with believable restraint. And Roxann did a fine job of differentiating her two characters.

Wonderful story, excellent performances all around. Again, this is also proof that Beltran delivers when given good material.

Having this told mostly from the Voth perspective was brilliant and why it works so well.

It's not a bad idea, and we have Janeway getting all Ripley, believe it or not!

"MACROCOSM"

It's like something out of season 7 TNG, but far more creative and likely more scientifically-plausible than "Genesis" was.

Also, here's a couple of telesnaps from deleted scenes long since forgotten but also from that other parallel dimension that few people know about:

Kathryn Janeway killed Covid19. With a knife.

I did not really like much of this season!

But "Flashback" was a pretty good crossover/tribute, and it was fun to see George Takei and Grace Lee Whitney in uniform again. And we got to see more of the Janeway-Tuvok friendship, which I always saw as an important relationship in the show.

S3 is all over the map. It has some really good episodes, but also quite a few series low points.

I know the Borg was later used a bit too much on VOY, but I love Unity. It was fascinating seeing how the former drones wanted to have a co-operative to make them all work better together.

A great pairing for these best friends. The ending when Tom tells Harry what he remembers and how he'll remember that for a long time... a single man tear is shed by me every time.

Saving "The Q and the Gray". It's a sub-par episode, but the scenes with Mulgrew and DeLancie are quite funny. Especially when cute puppies or heart shaped beds are involved. Classic "guilty pleasure" episode!

Well, all of my favourites for this season have been saved :bolian:.

I'll save "Displaced" I do like that the method of stealing Voyager is harmless, and the main cast all gets something to do.

Dang, missed saving it!

"THE Q AND THE GREY"

While VOY did wonders to the Borg, the Q were mishandled and demystified by the creation of the allusion that their continuum is shown to us as a desert area. But you know they weren't going to end with "Death Wish", which wasn't without its merits...

To be fair, given the two, I'd rather see more of Chakotay. But anyhoo,

Ouch! The only thing missing was a quiet chant of "Jerry! Jerry! Jerry!"

Q didn't think parenthood through. Not so swell for an omnipotent being, for which there is a quiet chant of "Maury! Maury! Maury!" in the background as well. Oh the nineties and all of those torrid little talk shows... and M & J there were the least brutal once the cameras stopped recording. But where would the stage be without actors?

It's a little dorky, but we get to see a follow-up to one of TNG's worst episodes:

"FALSE PROFITS"

A tease for a tease, but spoiler alert: Only the Ferengi make it through the shiny new wormhole that appears thanks to plot magic. Double-spoil: They get Neelix to don the disguise of a Ferengi and, once again, Ethan Phillips opts to show range instead of retread. Okay, I missed his performance as the evil biologist in "Menage a Troi", but doing range was the better thing to do and really showcases his talents. Definitely underrated... But I digress.

Yes kids, Trek did parody of televangelism too! But you think Janeway's transporter chief would have waited until the local dude wasn't in plain view of the shiny teleporter effect and all before snatching the two Ferengi... of which one was recast, but getting one of the two to reprise their role from that TNG massage oil episode was still a bit of a plus.

For a completely non-related reason, this came to mind:

You never thought that combination would ever happen, now did you? Tammy and Jm had rather a fun talk show and there aren't many talk shows I'd actually sit through... Yeah, the set looks a bit 1989 with all the neon and geometric goodies and everything, with the blandest thing on it is that flashing "Applause" sign (at least it's not streaking), but I'm not complaining as 1989 had it going on...

Also, note that Jm and Tammy are not related to:

It's no Amok Time, but Blood Fever is a pretty good take on Pon Farr, especially as being in the Delta Quadrant means that Vorik couldn't do what Vulcans usually do when their seven-year itch happens. :vulcan:

So many great ones still here! I will continue my pro-Kes run from season 2 and save "Warlord."

I LOVE a Trek possession episode, and this is one of the best. It manages what few Trek possession episodes manage to do -- it continue to give good material to specifically the taken-over character. Usually, you lose the possessed character entirely, and just have the fun of the actor getting to play someone else for a week.

Jennifer Lien is also so good in it.

The only thing that bothers me with it is that this fake breakup of Kes & Neelix was left to just stand in for a real one. I mostly blame future episodes for that, but this one also could've easily had the tag where Kes says "...even though I was possessed, I actually do need some time apart" or whatever.

Edit: Actually, doesn't "Warlord" also have the teaser that's all Talaxian foot porn? I guess that would make two complaints I have about the episode. Still a winner overall!

Saving "FAIR TRADE".

Great use of Neelix. It was bound to happen, getting to an area of space Neelix knew nothing about. I'm glad it was addressed.

I am probably in the minority, but I always loved Neelix's character.

Just realized that Real Life is left. It's fascinating seeing the Doctor's take on family life, and then of course B'Elanna retches in horror at it all! :D
