THE OBJECTIVE: A sudden-death elimination game in which we remove our personal favorite episodes from a themed list, until we arrive at the episode that is, if not the worst, at least the most disliked.

THE RULES: Below is a list of TNG, DS9, VOY, and ENT episodes directed by Mike Vejar -- Trek's sixth most prolific director!

Eliminate/save your favorite, or the one you deem the ‘best.’
Post something you love about the episode you are saving, and copy-and-paste the list with your choice removed.

You can use any standard you like to judge which option is "best." You can save episodes for being widely recognized “best Trek” classics, or for idiosyncratic qualities that no one appreciates but you.

But -- no tactical voting! You cannot remove an episode because you don’t think anyone else will, or because you feel it would threaten your preferred episode's chance to “win.”

You can take multiple turns. Leave at least 2 eliminations by other posters before you eliminate another episode.

[Seven of Five]

Tacking Into The Wind was one of DS9's best episodes during the Final Chapter. The Ezri speech about the poor state of Klingon politics was right on the nose. Worf killing Gowron was the perfect cap to the story that started all the way back in TNG's Sins Of The Father.

[Summer Solstice]

"Muse" - I love this episode. The format of cutting between the scenes of the play and the scenes on Voyager is clever and works really well, it's one of those episodes that would happen pretty much the same way regardless of which character had the main character role (not just Voyager characters, I think Picard would have done the same thing too) but Roxann Dawson does a great job. And the story feels very Star Trek.

[Sakonna]

"Tsunkatse" is one of those surprise great episodes. I can't resist a bunch of cool looking aliens, and this ep is bursting with them.

I also love thinking back to how people lost their shit over Voyager supposedly being degraded by a trashy wrestling cameo, but look at it now and you wonder "what the hell is the world's biggest movie star doing in this cheesy sci-fi show?"

Also nice to have a Seven-focused ep that has nothing to do with the Borg.

The Changing Face of Evil is another great Final Chapter episode. The Breen attacked Earth, which rattled the characters. The Defiant blowing up at the end was a real oh shit moment, too.

The Void a great episode with a great premise. I love Janeway creating a mini proto Federation-like alliance with the other trapped vessels.

[Summer Solstice]

It's difficult to pick which episode to save next as there are quite a few on this list that I think are about the same level. I'm saving "Barge of the Dead" - the barge is cool, I love that B'Elanna's idea of hell is being on Voyager and I love the B'Elanna and Janeway interactions - it's a shame they didn't have a lot more scenes together outside of briefing room scenes.

[Qonundrum]

Loved this one as a kid and still largely do.

TNG Season 1: "Coming of Age"​

Some plot contrivances and some wooden acting from a character who is not a Vulcan aside, various bits like the saving of the shuttlecraft and the well-behaved runaway kid, Wesley's entrance tests (especially), the reason for the crew being grilled like a juicy nummy cheeseburger, and so on were rather well done.

It also sets the stage for "Conspiracy", a story where I wish Tryla Scott wasn't a baddie because she would have held her own spinoff for her screen chemistry alone. Then again, when she gets to reveal herself, it's hard to deny that the suave villain-acting was pretty much as good - leave the audience wanting more, and either way that would be the case.

Sorry for the tangent, but:

TRYLA: Yes, the one thing both races share is a love of theatre. And you've put on a fine show.
PICARD: What race are you? Where are you from?
SAVAR: It's not important. Let us just say we've come a long way to join you.
TRYLA: It's a perfect match. We're the brains, you're the brawn.

"Rocks And Shoals" is the high point of the occupation arc for me. Perfectly done.

The bloodshot eyes of the Jem'Hadar actors at that brutally hot location, my god! It must have been such a miserable shoot. It really plays on-screen, though.

I can't believe how effective the CGI was at turning that quarry location into oceanfront.

Some glaring plot contrivances, but what's between those is really well-directed:

DS9 Season 6: "Valiant"​

Especially the acting scenes. Note that the captain of Valiant (interesting plot-driven ship name) is captained by a guy who'd double as a young Kirk in visage.

I love how the story redoes the Death Star Attack but turns it on its head... oops...

It's a bold attempt to hinge an entire episode based on a group of cadets and Ronald D Moore just about pulls it off with the script alone.

Some acting is iffy at times, but the direction helps keep it together.

Still, the contrivances to set up and resolve the plot are shaky at times. But in a way, some of it is needed to enhance the theme of hero worship, along with Jake's and Nog's experiences. Especially Jake in some ways as there's almost a cult-like mentality in with the Red Squad.

Also, the Red Squad reminded me of the Kangs from Doctor Who's "Paradise Towers". The Red Kangs were the best, y'know...

Saving "THE DARKNESS AND THE LIGHT".

Not only was it a great Kira episode, but it had some really unique angles used in many scenes, like in the teaser with the hunter probe.

(A side note: Vejar slso directed a LOT of other scifi shows, like BABYLON 5. I beliebe he directed more episodes of B5 than anyone. He also earned a nickname by many actors... "Vehar and Veharder". His name has the 'j' sound like an 'h', and they gave him that name because he would almost always be the very first person on the set, and the very last one to leave.)

Unimatrix Zero, Part Bwcause the Janeway-Seven-Borg Queen trifecta is always enjoyable.
