"The more complex the mind, the greater the need for the simplicity of play."

This is one of the best quotes from Star Trek, and one of the best life lessons as well. Is it completely original to 'Shore Leave'?

If so, I think this axiom is truly a gift from the classic show and transcends the show itself. With the proliferation and expansion of sport and gaming, it seems that since the 60's the world has really caught on to this.

I'm not really sure it's correct, though. Do theoretical physicists spend their recreational time playing angry birds rather than engaging in more challenging intellectual puzzles?

There are multiple forms of simple play. Playing with a child, playing with puzzles, Larping, watching Star Trek etc. Yes I'm sure all great minds enjoy simpler pleasures than their life's work pursuits. Actually sounds like a good basis for a documentary "Great Minds at Play"

I am more and more certain this is a human truth, distilled and presented well by Ted Sturgeon as Greg mentions in Star Trek. This line has always resonated with me.

For alot of people their work is their play like playing the piano or tennis. They get paid millions to dribble a ball and make all the right moves. But there are mind games as well - like Mary Pranks and video games which doesn't seem relaxing at all and violent as well.

I've always taken this line as being one of the motivations for Q's frequent messing around with Picard during TNG. It was his idea of having fun.

Did anybody notice when Q was chasing the Enterprise in 'Encounter at Farpoint' that he was proceeded by a holographic grid similar the the holodeck. You see Kirk would have figured out how this guy manipulated time and space like he did and got all these powers. Picard didn't seem interested in solving it. Did GR hint that he was a V'ger virus? Or did somebody just make that up. He almost looks type cast to be a baby of Decker and Ilea.
Sort of an unverted holosuite trapping Picard and co.. inside V'ger.
