The Mentalist - Anyone watching?

I was a bit surprised there was no thread for this show so I did a quick search and found nothing so... Are there any fans of the show kicking around here or am I it?

I just started getting into the show this season. I have few comments at this point, as I'm way behind on the continuity. However, FWIW, I'm DVRing it, and I guess that tells you I consider it worth watching.

Despite his apparent lack of empathy, and despite the hard times he's evidently been through, I think that Jane has a positive outlook, one which is therapeutic for me, the viewer. That's part of what I find appealing about the show. That's all I have for now. :)

Oh good, someone to talk about it with. :)

My gf has been watching it since day one and I watched some of the first season but didn't follow it. However I starting watching again in the the current (fourth) season and I liked it enough to go back and watch from the start.

Jane is a decent character and I agree that despite how he comes across he has got a decent, positive core. In some ways, he reminds me a bit of The Doctor, talking to himself, sometimes incomprehensible, sometimes outright condescending and with a quirky humour.

I also quite like Cho. Great humour in his deadpan delivery.

I've seen the first season and a handful of episodes here and there. Jane is almost entirely insufferable in some episodes, but unlike House, his character can get really annoying.

Simon Baker would be my first choice for a new Doctor.

Unfortunately, the writing has never been as good as the actors or the characters. There is only so much formula I can take and sometime earlier this season was my breaking point.

Simon Baker would be my first choice for a new Doctor too. I've just been waiting for the opportunity to say it. And I'll agree that the writing isn't always the best but I'm able to enjoy the weaker episodes because some of the acting makes up for it.

Chalk me up for someone else who thinks Baker would make a great Doctor. I'm constantly amazed at how complex his character is and what a good job he does of playing by turns someone so emotionally damaged and bitter, yet someone who finds almost child like glee in the silliest of things. I also like that he's a complete physical coward. It's fluff but hugely enjoyable fluff with a nice little cast. Lison is a good leader, Cho is awesome, Rigsby's brilliant (especially once you know he's Welsh) and I could stare at Grace all day...

I have a bit of a running debate with myself as to whether I prefer Castle or The Mentalist and it's a question I can never quite answer. Castle is probaby the more solid of the two, and the cops at least aren't portrayed as idiots who could never solve a crime without him, but having said that Rick Castle is paper thin, it's just Nathan Fillion mugging to the camera and firing off one liners. Don't get me wrong I love him to bits, but his character has nowhere near the depth of Baker's. Realistically Castle is the better show, but Patrick Jane is by far the better character.

Love the artwork, Venardhi.

I couldn't agree more. I'm not heavily into social media (forums are about it for me) but I think we should start a twitter thingy for Simon Baker as the next Doctor. ;)

And as an Aussie doing an American accent I'm sure he could do a UK accent easily enough. You can actually hear his Australian accent at the end of each episode with the "Stayed tuned for scenes from our next episode" bit.

Ah, we don't get that bit in the UK.

I suspect he'd be too big a name for the BBC to snag, but if the big budget film goes ahead (and I'm not a fan of the idea) and if the incumband Doctor (hopefully still Smith) doesn't get chosen to front that film, then Baker would be one of my top picks for the role.

Naw. His career is probably as big as it is going to get. There is always a chance, but I just can't see where he would go from here. If The Mentalist ends within the next few years, a half decade (in TV or Film) as The Doctor would be right up his alley.

Well possibly, depends if he wants to uproot his family and move to Cardiff for 9 months of the year :)

Since he's been the lead in two American network shows going to the BBC for Doctor Who wouldn't be a step up in his career. Actors tend to want to break into the US industry, not break out. And the BBC certainly couldn't dangle more money as an incentive. The only way it would ever happen would be if he turned out to be a fan and wanted the role.

My gf also commented on the similarities between Patrick Jane and the Doctor and wondered if he, or someone on the creative team, was a fan.

Yeah, I know, double posting and all that but...

I'm watching a third season episode right now and right after the teaser who do I see sharing a scene? Connor Trinneer and John Billingsley. I already like this episode and it's barely started.

Cho is the Asian Joe Friday (wait a minute- Cho? Joe? hmmm...)

Never watched enough Dragnet but we've all heard "Just the facts". :)

And the Star Trek connection continues too. Connor Trinneer, John Billingsley, Linda Park, Ethan Phillips and Robert Picardo have all guest starred and Roxann Dawson has directed a few episodes. Plus they've made a couple Trek reference in other episodes so someone involved seems to be a Trek fan.

And Malcolm McDowell has a recurring character as well (though we all know he wasn't a main Trek character and has a long resume).

It's a drag that I'm almost done S3 and have already seen the most recent of S4. Now I have to wait for episodes.

Huge fan of this show. And one of my favorite things about it is Cho, whose deadpan Jack Webb style delivery is freakin' hysterical. I also think that Van Pelt is just plain hot. But it's mainly Patrick Jane himself that's the main attraction.

I like this show.

I also like Psych, but there are many differences between the two shows, so it doesn't bother me that they both have "psychics"

I like Jane, and I like Cho. Van Pelt is just annoying, and I wouldn't miss her if they decided that Red John should pay her a visit :O
