"The Menagerie" theatrical showing and residuals...

Would the contracts the cast signed back then have covered such an scenario?

No, only for the writers (I'm pretty sure they still get their tiny amount per screening), which is the bitter complaint of many 60s TV actors of shows that have stood the test of time ("Gilligan's Island", "Batman", "Star Trek", etc), while the actors themselves generally remained typecast and unemployed (except for convention appearances) throughout the 70s and 80s.

However, the secondary tier of Star Trek actors did get to negotiate a rather hefty pension deal with Paramount for their ST V contracts, arguing that they had contributed much to the show's syndication longevity. It was one nice thing that Director Shatner did for ST V. (Shatner & Nimoy got their "set for life" deals negotiating ST:TMP.)

From TNG on, all the main casts have excellent royalty deals for future screenings.

The current television residuals laws were enacted in 1969, so the original cast only gets paid for reruns of about half of season 3.

But Shatner had residuals in his contract from day one didn't he?

And isn't that the reason Jack Lord didn't work out for kirk? (he wanted part ownership?)
