The Many Miranda predecessors!

Jackill's fandom art adds the Benning, differing minimally from Coventry.

Was Googling something else entirely yesterday, and stumbled onto another Miranda predecessor by from Jackill. This one was called the Vindicator. Whereas Benning seems to have the short hull, like Surya, Vindicator has the extended hull, like Coventry. Both have nacelle pylons that drop straight down, like Coventry's do, but they also both have an angle on the pylon from the profile view, like Surya.

If we're talking about variants, I was perusing a local second-hand store and saw a book that had a three-nacelled Miranda variant.

If I were to guess, I'd say you probably found "Jackill's Star Fleet Reference Manual, Ships of the Fleet Volume I, by Eric Kristiansen (1992)" and his design, the Comanche.

Possibly. I can't remember. I don't recall the pylons connecting the Engines, but that image does look familiar.

Which is scaled down to Miranda size in the ST:Axanar fan film project, although their version replaces the middle nacelle with a secondary hull.

The nacelles-down design has been popular with the creators of alternate designs ever since ST2:TWoK. Which is rather a pity, as it was a long wait, basically all the way to ENT, for really different (yet still recognizably Starfleet) designs to get introduced.

Okay, a few computer games tried out alternative configurations before ENT already, but few of those stuck. And the ST:FC novelties were quite timid in comparison. But now the Abrams movies have done their share of kitbashing, and those designs stick very well, thank you!
