News The Man Who Killed Don Quixote will screen on April 10 only

I never thought we would actually see a final product of any rendition of Terry Gilliam's attempts to adapt Don Quxiote. Of course, it's not a straight-up adaptation, rather a variation, i.e. Jonathan Pryce plays a man who thinks he's Don Quxiote.

Either way, it's a new Terry Gilliam film and that's always cause for celebration!



There's no US release date yet, but the film will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May.

This is like the Half Life 3 of movies.

 

I'm not sure that I'll believe that this movie exists until I've seen it. Even the trailer doesn't convince me!

I imagine there will be a sense of "what might have been" while watching it, too, imagining the versions that weren't with Robert Duvall or John Hurt or Ewan McGregor.

 

Heh, even as a non-gamer, I can appreciate that allusion.

No kidding. I'm amazed it's gotten this far with Gilliam's long history of production issues (and not this film). Considering it's going to be screened at Cannes, I'm feeling rather optimistic at this point. Assuming it doesn't bomb there...

Johnny Depp, too. I feel like John Hurt was the biggest missed opportunity and not just because he's no longer with us. I can just imagine the kind of otherworldly performance he could've given us.

That said, I'm a huge fan of Jonathan Pryce, and while he's no Hurt, I expect he'll give us an extraordinary performance.

 

I hate to break this to you, but The Man Who Killed Don Quixotes won't be screened at Cannes. A former producer on the film claims he has the rights to the film, and Gilliam has taken him to court to determine who owns the film. So, until that's resolved, it's been pulled from Cannes.

 

Oh, damn. I had heard there was a rights issue, but not that it's been pulled from Cannes. Damn.

 

It happened this week, after the trailer dropped. My guess is that Gilliam thought the issue with Blanco would be resolved in time for Cannes, but he and his backers reassessed and realized that it won't be.

 

I hadn't even realize Gilliam was giving this one another try before I saw the trailer the other day.
Hopefully the dispute with the producer won't prevent the release.
I was a little confused by the description I read, because they were talking about jumping back and forth in time, but the trailer made it look more like reality and "Don Quixote"'s fantasies. So is there actual time travel involved, or just reality/fantasy?

 

I said this was the Half Life 3 of movies but with all the ups and downs and false starts it's probably more the Duke Nukem Forever but I hope the final product ends up better than that situation did.

 

The sense I get from the synopsis is that the film will be similar in spirit (but the mechanics aren't inherently the same) as The Adventures of Baron Munchsausen and The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus.

 

^Huh. I really enjoy the latter (though parts get a little tedious on rewatching), but had some trouble with the former.

 

Turns out that not only is the film premiering at Cannes after all, it's closing the festival.

 

Based on the description I've read for the film, it does appear to have some fantastical elements to it.

Looks like it might actually be real!

 

There's good news and there's bad news.

The good news is a French court has ruled against Paulo Branco and will allow the film to screen at the Cannes Festival as planned.

The bad news is the film might be losing Amazon as its American distributor. I can only hope the film is received well at Cannes and convinces Amazon to stay on board.

The even worse news is Terry Gilliam suffered from a minor stroke, but the good news is he's resting well at home.

 

Wow, that quite a mix of good news and bad news.

 

Some good news: Sounds like Gilliam didn't actually have a stroke, but he was taken ill and is recovering well. He's still planning to attend Cannes.

On the other hand, Amazon is definitely not distributing the film.
