The majority of people seeing the movie were older than 25

Don't know if it's a good or bad thing, but I noticed this at the two viewings I went to. Most of the audience were older, around mid 20's to their 40's I would guess. I took my 8 year old son to see the film on Saturday, since he loves Star Trek too, and he was one of the only kids in the audience. But then again the Monster vs. Aliens movie could probably be explained for that.

But having said that, both viewings I went to were packed. Great turn out both times.

There are more people in the population over 25 anyway, so I don't know what the statistics are supposed to prove? The cinema I went to had lots of younger people in.

Those numbers are pretty interesting since it seems to me like Paramount especially wanted the under 25 crowd, yet in the process managed to yank in he older group instead. I guess they inadvertently targeted the wrong audience or maybe it was jsut a poor time to release a movie for the under 25 crowd (most high schoolers and junior high students are still in school and college students are in the middle of final exams)

This quite surprises me and i'm a bit saddened that they didn't want to see it. I hope it is only lack of word and mouth and exams etc.

If i had kids i would have taken them to see it.

And our poll sez that there is alot of young people around 18-22, and women give better scores and young men (17-18) are writing the reviews - telling everyone that the movie "wasn't close to the original crew that the TV series had" and giving the lower scores.

Misuderstanding statistics. If only 10% of a population is under 25, yet 35% of a films audience is under 25...

...It means that a high pecentage of under 25's are in the audience.

It's been ages since I did statistics, so I can't really explain better than that. Maybe someone else will pick up on it.

Truth in this; at least one girl I talked to said she was going to see it after her exams.

Heck, yes, there's alot of graduation exams, if I remember?
There's even holidays, the Victory day, the weather is good, everyone's on the streets, or at the bar, drinking beer...

We have a winner!
That link is actually saying the opposite to what it thinks it's saying - the movie is above-quota popular with the under 25s, not the over 25s. Under 25's make up about 30% of the population of the US, so are over representing themselves at Star Trek by 5%. Conversely, over-25s are under-represented. However, the point still stands - the movie si clearly popular with the over-25 crowd, so worries about 'aiming it at teenagers' etc are clearly unfounded.

Thanks for helping me out there. :)

I knew what I was saying, but I didn't know how to say it!

Also, I seem to recall reading somewhere that older moviegoers tended to wait until a week or two after release (read: after most of the teenyboppers have had their fill) to take in "blockbuster" movies like this. If this form holds for Star Trek, its traditional demographic may be under-represented now, but it won't be for long.

The thing that will keep up the 'over 25' crowd for Star Trek more than, say, Spider-man, is the nostalgia factor - there are a lot of people who have been fans since the 60s who will go and see this film (possibly multiple times) - people who could now easily be in their 50s and beyond. Although simply as a well-reviewed action film it will attract the young crowd, it has a built in draw for the elder generations too.

Ahh okay, the numbers had me worried for a bit and I can honestly say that statistics and math arent my best areas ;)
