The Lost Fleet

sojourner

Admiral
In Memoriam
So, after some comments I have read around the bbs about this series I have started reading them. 3 down and starting the 4th tonight.

So far the books are OK, but not the "definitive space Naval action" I had been hearing about. In fact, Campbell leaves thing pretty nebulous regarding the technical aspects. The only thing he really nails down is situational awareness being limited by the speed of light and distances involved.

That doesn't bother me so much. There is enough to it to still enjoy it. What does bother me is the lack of progression that I sense developing. For every "problem officer" he removes there seems to be an identical one to take it's place. Just from reading the back covers of books 4 and 5 it does not look like there is going to be any resolution to the fleet getting home. Too many battles and he is going to need more red shirts... er, ships.

So, is the author milking this cow? or is he going to get to the end of this story? Is he afraid if he finishes it that the setting will have no more stories to tell?

I think I read the first book a couple of years ago. I think. It didn't leave much of an impression, apparently.
