The Licensees - Impact of May 2009 on them

I wonder how pissed the toy companies (Playmates, Master Replicas) and licensees are right now.

They paid the price they did believing that they'd have product in the stores to support a heavily hyped movie at the busiest retail season of the year, Christmas

Now that it’s moved to May, they may have to significantly downgrade their estimates, which may affect the perception of the “value” of the premium they paid.

I wonder if Paramount took this factor into account prior to the announcement.

I don't think that they've gone into production yet (most of them, anyway) so I doubt it will be a big deal.

Considering the film was originally supposed to open on 12/25; I doubt they're crying since you need the film BEFORE Christmas to generatethe toy sales - thus they are probably just as happy to see a may 2009 release. I guarentee the DVD will be for sale by Christmas 2009; and that ramp up ad campaign will spur toy and other merchadising sales as well.

I very much doubt it. Playmates can't be possibly happy with this. They're going to miss the biggest time of the year for selling toys.

Movie-based toys are always in the stores before the movie hits--and you can probably thank George Lucas for that. Toys for all the Star Wars prequels, Superman Returns, Batman Begins, Transformers, etc., were all on the shelves up to a month before the movies were released. The toys are often considered part of the marketing campaign to generate interest in a film before the movie.

Star Trek XI toys were likely to hit store shelves in November, and now Playmates probably will have to reset their production and shipping schedules for April...

Let's see...

I don't own one of those companies. I don't work for one of those companies.

I don't care.

I Reckon some merch will ship in time 4 xmas, why not?lots of sci fi movie product has come out ages before the movie.

Well every Star Wars movie came out in May, and I think they might have sold the odd toy or two over the years...

Just as long as we don't get a "Star Trek - Early Bird Certificate" then we'll be ok I think ;)

But if you use that gift certificate, you'll get the special Spock-with-spring-loaded-rocket-firing-backpack figure!

Sweet! Sign me up!

Darn, I've been checking all the ToyFair coverage, and the only Trek I'm seeing is for Mego, Art Asylum and Sideshow. No sign of any new movie stuff.

They must be holding off until next Feb. :(
