'The Last Resort' near-future thriller - pilot for 2012

There is a an interesting show that's just been picked for a pilot for ABC network.
The Last Resort

a thriller set in the near future when the country is very fractured and revolves around the crew of a U.S. nuclear submarine who become hunted after ignoring an order to shoot nuclear missiles. They escape to a NATO listening outpost where they publicly declare themselves to be the world's smallest nuclear nation with 24 nuclear warheads. The show will explore the society the fugitives create, the natives they meet and how what they've done affects the group and its unity. "It also allows us to examine what is going on in this country in micro form,"

The project, titled The Last Resort, was pitched to the networks on Friday with the deal at ABC closing in principal last night, though final points are still being ironed out. Sony Pictures TV, where Ryan is based with an overall deal, is producing.

In a sense it reminds me a bit of Jericho and The Hunt for Red October. I'm sure we'll have some near future technology also on the show.

Anyhoo, I'm not that impressed with ABC's track record on sci-fi.

At least it's not another sci fi cop show. I generally support any sci fi idea that doesn't sound like every other frakken idea out there.

But it does sound like a tricky concept to get right. What's America like at the time? How does that play into the refugees' decision? Why should we sympathize with the refugees? I can imagine ways this could go wrong more easily than right.

And to the extent this concept is reminiscent of Jericho, it's just going to make me want Jericho back and not care what's going on with the refugees when the interesting story is taking place in America. Still pisses me off they cancelled Jericho just when it was getting good.

I'm in a bit of disbelief. This concept sounds too funky for a network. At least ABC is trying. Now that V is gone, the only use I have for them is Desperate Housewives.

The kooky premise already has me on board for the pilot episode at a minimum.

But this show is going to need a huge main cast and even larger reoccuring cast, and a decent budget to make the show feel right in terms of scope. And the writing is going to need to be sharp.

And the chances of a show on ABC having all of those things as well as pulling an audience of the proper size to keep it alive?

Low, very low. But I'm rooting for it!
