"The Last Legion"

Just got the DVD for this movie, and I figured it would be a disaster. The reviews were lousy, and it was a DeLaurentiis production, and was in theaters about a minute, so the signs were there. It stars Colin Firth and Ben Kingsley, though, so I thought I would give it a shot. I was pleasantly surprised. I found it to be an enjoyable "B" movie - the story moves along pretty well and the action is ok. Its bad history, but what movie isn't. Firth sleepwalks through his part, but Kingsley is game, and the Indian chick in it is smokin. And as an added bonus, Alex Siddig has a small part in it. Anyway, I was entertained for 2 hours, and it was not the total mess I expected it to be. If you take it for what it is, a B movie "epic", its not bad. Did anyone else see it? What did you think?

There is a book? I borrowed it from the library over the summer time thinking that I was going to have time to watch it during my recovery from surgery but never got around to it. This is the movie where the last Roman Emperor defends Rome from the barbarian hordes and its tied into Excalibur and King Arthur right?

Pretty much. It's been a while since I read it but it was by Valerio Massimo Manfredi .

As I recall, some of the characters are different from the movie though.

It ends up
"in Britain and the Battle of Baden Hill"]

More or less. Rome is long lost to barbarians at this point of history, and the last Roman Emperor is a kid named Romulus Augustus. The story narrates his (made up) escape from captivity by a bunch of loyal legionaries and their flight to Britain. It's from a novel by Valerio Massimo Manfredi, a quite successful Italian writer.
