The Kazon Unworthy of assimilation

Josh Kelton

Commander
Red Shirt
Something I was wondering, having recently re-watched "Mortal Coil" .....

It's stated by Seven of Nine that the Kazon were unworthy of assimilation.

"The Borg gain knowledge through assimilation. What they can't assimilate, they can't understand." [Scorpion Part 1]

Wouldn't the Kazon have to be assimilated in the first place, for the Borg to determine whether they were worthy of assimilation or not.

But by that point, it would be a moot point, since they would already be assimilated.

What Seven said was actually a jab by one of the writers against the Kazon species. I don't think it was meant to be taken seriously.

Presumably, if the Borg were to assimilate a small sample of Kazon (say a ship or two) and discover that they stole all their relatively primitive technology from the Trabe and were nothing special biologically, they might "dispose" of the Kazon that had been assimilated and declare their species, as a whole, to be unworthy. Not likely, though, as they still would be useful as basic drones.

Basically, a writer was just disgusted with how much the Kazon had been used and didn't think they were ever really legitimate enemies.

In 'Q-Who' the Borg didn't seem that interested in the Enterprise at first until it had a bit of a look and was attacked but it's weapons. Seemed to me that in Voyager the focus of the Borg was the assimilation of newer technology and information. The Kazon were probably too small and no threat to be even noticed.

From Mortal Coil.

NEELIX: Thanks, I think. Ah! Here it is. Oh, this will be perfect for containing a small amount of protomatter. Last time I used this little wonder I nearly lost it to the Kazon.
SEVEN: The Kazon. Species three two nine.
NEELIX: You're familiar with them.
SEVEN: The Borg encountered a Kazon colony in the Gand Sector, grid six nine two zero.
NEELIX: Were they assimilated?
SEVEN: Their biological and technological distinctiveness was unremarkable. They were unworthy of assimilation.
NEELIX: I didn't realise the Borg were so discriminating.
SEVEN: Why assimilate a species that would detract from perfection?
NEELIX: Good point. Well, if you'll excuse me, I'm needed in the shuttlebay. Pleasant regenerating.

From Relativity.

DUCANE: Not precisely, but we've narrowed the window to a period two years before you joined the crew, when the ship was under attack.
SEVEN: Species three two nine, the Kazon.
DUCANE: Our database indicates Voyager was boarded twice during that period.
SEVEN: The Kazon are an inferior species. They don't possess the technology to create such a complex weapon.

Mortal Coil was written Bryan Fuller, and relativity was written by Bryan Fuller (And friends) but you know that Voyager conspiracies never work out how one thinks they will.

Is Bryan a vicious little bitch, or just misunderstood?

All I'll say is that I found the idea of Borg "perfection" to be really annoying. Who came up with that idea?

The Kazon had a guy who kind of sounded like Harvey Korman, which is pretty cool in my book. Cullah totally reminds me of Hedley Lamarr, down to the incompetent sidekick:

The Kazon never seemed much more than cheap ass Klingon knock-offs, and far more irritating than interesting as antagonists go. I found Seven's disparaging remarks about them pretty funny.

I agree. Of all the ST foes throughout all the series, the Kazon are at the bottom of my list. That was a cow that got milked too often. I wanted to grab 'em by their horrible hair and slap 'em upside the head whenever I saw them. Whew, I feel better. now. Thanks for that.

Gypsies are thieves and entertainers who live inbetween empires becuase no one wants them.

What about Mongols?

Ghangus Khan had a mobile city of tents consisting of a million soldiers on horseback who dominated everything they could see, and everyone else beyond the mongols eyesight knew better than to think just cause this warlord hand't been around in a couple years, that he could't just set up camp next week and eat their children if he noted the slightest speck of resistence.

I would guess that the Borg can tell just by examining a species from a distance, whether or not it's worthy of assimilation. If the Borg had already assimilated some Trabe (they don't have to assimilate an entire species, just a few individuals, to know whether the race is worth pursuing), they'd know anyway, since the Kazon have nothing that the Trabe don't.

How did they feed a million soldiers?

I always assumed there was something defective about the Kazon physically that made them wither away when assimilated as well as not offering anything new or useful to make up for this. So they don't make good workhorse drones and have zero to offer. Lucky for them really.

It's just the same with us.

Why there are so many, many many people that we will not sleep with despite everything being in the right place.

Well, strictly not that many.

Okay, none.

there is no one i wouldn't sleep with.

I'd fuck a black snake with a festered ass if some held it's head.

And on my plantar surfaces too.

Timecop "What does it say on my boot"

Thug "Um, nothing."

Timecop "read between the lines"

Thugs "get the fuck out of here?"

You made me think about Time Cop.

YOU MONSTER!

It's called Stockholm Syndrome.

If I had the money, I'd rescue all the little rednecks from being brainwashed into following NASCAR.

But that's trampling all over Freedom of Religion in the US Bill of Rights.

Regarding this:

Wouldn't the Kazon have to be assimilated in the first place, for the Borg to determine whether they were worthy of assimilation or not.

They still have sensors.

By way of analogy: A car thief doesn't know exactly how much he can make by selling off a dismantled car's parts until he's actually stolen one. But if he sees a rusted-out '83 Chevy Nova, he can probably tell at a glance that he doesn''t want to bother.
