The joy is gone...

I'm quoting myself here from another thread, but it sums up my feelings.
I do have to say the joy is almost all gone for me in regards to Trek outside of my specific interests. I participate in very few discussions anymore beyond perhaps the tech stuff. I have zero interest in pondering the merits (or lack thereof) of references from much of post '79 Trek. The last three series and most of the films have been near total bust for me and I have no confidence or enthusiasm whatsoever for the forthcoming film. So much of it has become one huge steaming pile of crap.

The tech stuff is easier to focus on because I can easily say, "Don't bother me with irrelevant contemporary Trek crap" and get away with it. But try saying that in a regular discussion forum and you become a target and basically pariah. So basically why bother going there anymore?

Star Trek has been ruined by an oversaturation of mediocrity. Its heydey was during TNG (and we then thought that was overdoing it), but now it's just so fragmented and bloated and, and...

Aw, just fuck it!
Okay, so take your best shots 'cause I don't give a shit anymore.

But you'll always have the good ol' TOS forum where we can all have a group hug and discuss anything pre-modern Trek. :)

No, seriously, somehow I'm sorry that you can't enjoy parts of the board anymore. I guess the thing is that you have to accept that the Star Trek you once liked has changed in a direction you don't like. After all this doesn't take away anything you still like about the series, does it? Or is there something else that bothers you? The attitude of some posters for example?

I agree with you to a great degree. While there were highlights to TNG and VERY sporadic highlights after that, the series that followed TNG basically all sucked.

TOS has always been and will remain to be the best Trek has to offer. Even TNG with all of it's PC garbage is a weak imitation. Cueball Captain's acting skills aside, most everyone else stunk on that show.

You don't like any Trek past the original? No problem. We agree that we both love the original (albeit in somewhat different ways). We disagree on some of the spinoffs, but that's cool. The only real issue is that you seem pretty closed-minded (even hysterical) about your feelings toward the spinoffs. But now that you don't care, it would seem that this problem is going away. It's all good.

Warped9, my interest in Trek has waxed and wained for me over the years, too. Walk away. Forget Star Trek for a while. It sounds like it would do you good.

Star Trek isn't going anywhere. People do, though. If you want it again in the future, Star Trek will be waiting for you.

It's not like this is a newly discovered or newly expressed sentiment.

People in a lot of the fora simply quickly got tired of having their own enthusiasms and interests put down or rejected out of hand ("irrelevant modern crap") as if from some Olympian height of judgment and taste. If there is a group of folks who are unjustifiably prone to doing this, it would be the TOS-Onlies on the Internet.

If you 'Don't Give A Shit"; WHY come to this fan BBS and post a long explaination of 'Here's why too'? If you really didn't give a shit, you just stop coming here and posting/reading.

So, I call shenanigans.

There may also be something else going on. On a cold, wet Wisconsin day, one when it feels like it might even snow, I can say LOUDLY this has been a fucking long winter. It has to have been even worse in Canada. I wouldn't even pick a new brand of toothpaste on a day like this.

How's your weather, Ray?

I suggest a nice, long blow job by someone dressed as a Klingon.

Works for me every time.

It's easy to get tired of something, no matter how much you love it. I haven't watched any Trek in nearly 2 years other than the occasional Original Series episode that I feel like reviewing. And there have been long pauses in that as well. Familiarity breeds contempt, and personally, I think it will be a good five or ten years before I can watch Trek as fresh again. make it thirty years for Voyager.

But this BBS is a nice place to hang out, and there's more to talk about than just Trek here. Nice people too.

Well, there is the highlight of being able to annoy you. That's always good for a laugh.

So the Joy really isn't gone and you really do only post here to be a prick.

Thanks for confirming.

Plenty of fanon too, to give one just the kind of new Trek they like. And nothing stopping one from writing the Trek one likes, except, well, that's harder to accomplish, and possibly thankless.

Hypothetically, Trek could last 500 years. Can you imagine how different it would all be? How many nooks and crannies of the universe could be explored? Not to mention rebooted en toto once in a while? The only thing staying the same would be the title.

But then, as much as I love Trek, I'm glad to have seen other series too, like Firefly and Space 1999. And the Stargates. Plenty of other sci fi possibilities to be created too.

I'm a man of many talents.

Save the personal insults for somewhere else, OK folks?
A person started this thread to say he doesn't give a crap after telling everyone they suck.
Doesn't that give people the right to respond?
I think it does.
If you don't give a sh*t, don't come here.
I give a sh*t, so I come here.
I have as much or more reason to hate some Trek shows, but I still love the concept and MOST of the people in here.
MY joy is only gone when I let people like Warped9 take it away from me.

^^ Well, that's what you're reading into it. Actually I recall saying that the fandom has gotten to a point I can't identify with anymore. I have little common ground with it anymore.

I did say the franchise had become rife with mediocrity and crap. I did say that I've grown impatient in fending off current Trek references that I have no interest in.

But I didn't call anyone names.

Yet whenever I espouse a dissenting viewpoint rather than sucking up the company line I'm called intolerant.

Do you want me to get personal? Someone tries it on me and I can't turn it own its head to respond?

There are some around here that have annoyed me to no end, particular those that attack rather than sticking to the subject at hand. Actually I don't give them a second's thought until they go out of their way to discredit me on a personal level rather than simply offering up their own counter point on an issue.
