The Host (Stephenie Meyer) being made into movie staring Saoirse Ronan

EXCLUSIVE: Saoirse Ronan has been set to star in The Host, the screen adaptation of the bestselling novel by Twilight Saga author Stephenie Meyer. Scripted by Andrew Niccol, the film figures to be one of the hot titles when Inferno launches sales at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival next week. Niccol, who was originally set to direct, might resurface as the filmmaker.

Ronan, the Oscar-nominated star of Atonement, The Lovely Bones and most recently Hanna, will play Melanie Stryder, one of the last humans putting up a fight against an alien species called Souls.

The heard about this series a while back only because it has the same author as the Twilight books. The main character is going to be played by that creepy little girl from Atonement. I wonder how well it will do?

^ That's where you know Saorise from? Not "The Lovely Bones"? Anyways I kind of surprised they're adapting this. I kind of dismissed "The Host" as being of no substance or popularity.

Never saw The Lovely Bones. :shrug:

I'm guessing they are making The Host into a movie because of how big the Twilight movies are.

^ Yeah i guess they're trying to find something to succeed Twilight once it ends. The thing is they're assuming people will have read this book lol.

As much as I despise the very existence of Twilight, a (female) friend persuaded me to read The Host and I actually found myself really enjoying it. It's not too overly romantic (although there's certainly a few gag-worthy moments) but it's fairly good drama with some interesting concepts. I love Saoirse Ronan and Andrew Niccol so I'm looking forward to this adaptation, just as long as they don't try to gear too hard towards Twilight fans.

I'm probably the only person on Earth who thinks of Saorise as the girl from "Death Defying Acts."

Sigh.

I haven't read The Host or seen any of Saoirse Ronan's films, but I am interested that the screenwriter is Niccol, who was the screenwriter of Gattaca and The Truman Show.

Andrew Niccol will direct The Host

Though Niccol originally provided the screenplay, Susanna White ("Generation Kill," Nanny McPhee Returns) was set to direct the adaptation of Stephanie Meyer's novel. Plans seem to have changed, though, and Niccol will now helm the project as well.

The novel, released in 2008, represents the first full-length work from Meyer after her overwhelmingly popular "The Twilight Saga"

I thought The Host was pretty good, and I like Saoirse Ronan and Andrew Niccol, so I am optimistic.

Jake Abel Is Frontrunner For Male Lead

EXCLUSIVE: Actor Jake Abel is frontrunner to play one of the two male lead roles in The Host, the adaptation of the science fiction novel by Twilight author Stephenie Meyer that will star Saoirse Ronan and be directed by Andrew Niccol, who wrote the script. Negotiations are expected to begin soon. Abel was chosen from among a group of young thesps and he is negotiating for the role of Ian.
