The Holy Trinity of Science Fiction

Mal

Commodore
Star Trek, The Foundation Series (Asimov), and...???

Some would say Close Encounters, others might posit E.T. A few would choose Blade Runner, a couple might say Ender's Game. Would we have takers for The Matrix? Frankenstein is a classic! But Star Wars was a block-buster. And blimey! What about Doctor Who?!? Heck, the trinity might not even include Star Trek (or The Foundation either).

Over the next one (1) day, please propose a holy trinity for science fiction. I will compile the list, and every day there after, we can have an elimination round until we are left with the primo three.

Let the games begin!

N.B.: If anyone proposes Lexx, I will lose my faith in humanity :D

It's certainly harder to choose when you're mixing media like that. Unless maybe each member of the "trinity" is from a different medium. If so, then I'd say -- For books: sure, the Foundation series would be a fine choice, I love it (Dune might also be a contender, but I'll stick with Foundation). For TV, definitely Star Trek. For movies: I'd say in terms of sheer popularity, it would have to be Star Wars, but if we're also talking about importance and influence, we could also go with Blade Runner or 2001: A Space Odyssey. But I guess I'll go with Star Wars.

Novel: Buck Alice and the Actor Robot by Walter Koenig (2006)
TV: The Starlost (1973)
Film: The Star Crystal (1986)

Literary:

Foundation/Robot
Dune
2001,etc

TV:

1. ST
2. Outer Limits
3. Twilight Zone

Movies:

1. Star Wars
2. Star Trek
3. 2001

For film, it's Star Wars, Alien and Matrix. Pretty much products of their decade that had lasting effects on the film space long after they finished airing.

In order to do that, first I'd have to know what a "holy trinity" is.

Anyway, I think Farscape should by on any list; it's use of puppets was unparalleled in this genre, and the blatant "space opera" style (instead of pretending to be something it's not) was refreshing.

From a personal level I'd say Doctor Who, Star Trek and Blakes 7...

thinking more rationally Who Trek and Wars...

This is hard because I'm not sure how to break them down. The Top 3 for popularity? How they influenced the genre? Best scifi in general, whether it was popular or not? My favorite 3?

I need to think about this, but I'm inclined to put Lexx on the list. :p

Star Trek is the most significant sci-fi franchise on television, while Star Wars is for film. To them I'd add the X-Files, for re-introducing and popularising a very different brand of sci-fi (the "what if?" type set in the present day) which had a wide ranging influence that's still going strong today.

TV:
1. Star Trek
2. Babylon 5
3. Farscape

Movies:
1. Star Wars
2. Alien
3. 2001

Books:
1. Foundation
2. Dune
3. A Canticle of Leibowits - I just love that book.
