The history collection novel rerelease

Doctorwhovian

Fleet Captain
After the 50th anniversary rerelease and the Monster set it looks like we're getting more reprints, called the history collection next year

http://theconsultingdetectivesblog....llection-reprint-series-coming-february-2015/

Although most of the stories are not historicals in the classic sense (Which mean a DW story without aliens or science fiction elements apart from the Doctor and the time travel), they do focus on the Doctor involved in past events.

Perhaps what will interest fans the most is that the New Adventure Human Nature-which the author Paul Cornell adapted into a two part Tennant TV episode-is the Seventh Doctor story selected.

No Capaldi stuff though since he's only had like three novels so far.

Yeah, looking forward to this. I like these annual reprints of classic Doctor novels, good way for most of the Doctors to get fair novel coverage in a year.

Weird choices - only the first two (which are brilliant, BTW, Roundheads is my favourite Gatiss book) are actual historicals, and Shadow In The Glass (also really good, mind you) is set in the present day...

I admit to bias, mind you, having written both the first pure historical original DW novel, and the only Third Doctor proper historical, neither of which are included...

Ouch! I was hoping for a reprint of the Target novelisations. I've still got fond memories of those. I actually read most of those when it came to the first to the fourth Doctors, as I had yet to be hatched for the first three, and spent my childhood hidden behind a settee for the fourth. So reading those novelisations made their adventures seem like feature films in my mind.

I have to admit to a slight disappointment now I'm finally watching those stories on TV. It turns out that The Time Warrior didn't have a battle sequence on a par with the battle of Helm's Deep.

I don't know if the covers are public yet. I've seen them, and they're striking. Very different than the anniversary reprints and the monster reprints.

I can sort of understand why they chose Human Nature instead of Sanctuary; if they were only going to reprint one seventh Doctor novel, publish the one that was adapted into an episode.

Also, much as I enjoy The English Way of Death, I'd rather have seen something more like Asylum. Or, even Managra, even though that's actually in the future.

I think I would have ditched The Shadow in the Glass entirely and published an eighth Doctor novel instead. Perhaps The Turing Test or The Adventuress of Henrietta Street.

Oh, that one I totally get - my only issue is with it, like so many others on the list, not being a pure historical.

That and, TBH, I thought it already had been reprinted...

I'd have gone with Eye Of Heaven, but I doubt there's much chance of the Beeb reprinting any of Jimbo's books....

I'd have gone with History 101 or Revolution Man for 8...

Excited to see The English Way of Death getting a reprint. I'm always glad to see the hard to find Virgin books coming out (not that the ol' BBC paperbacks are all that easy to find anymore either).

I guess. But I really loved "Sanctuary." (Even if the ending still pisses me off! :( )

I hated "The Adventuress of Henrietta Street." It's just too weird. The prose is too dense. The device of having the story told as a history book in confusing. It's never made clear what the intentions or viewpoint of the author are and exactly how much of this story he expects us to believe. (Also, I'm not sure that a Tantric brothel is an appropriate setting for a Doctor Who story.)

Overall, I'm looking forward to these. I enjoy being able to pick up Doctor Who novels in stores rather than scouring Amazon for used copies where I have to pay $4 shipping per book! (Plus, last time I tried to find a used copy of "The Roundheads," it was way too expensive. Here's hoping this brings down the price a little, like the Monster Collection did with "Illegal Alien" earlier this year.)

I've already read "Amorality Tale" & "Dead of Winter." "Amorality Tale" was a bit of a slog. But "Dead of Winter" may be my favorite of all of the Matt Smith novels (with the possible exception of "Borrowed Time").

IIRC, I already bought "The Shadow of Glass" from Amazon a few months ago.

I've never heard of "The Witch Hunters" or "The English Way of Death." Although, I think I'm already sold on "The English Way of Death" from this line:
‘He plans to destroy the world, next Tuesday.’
‘How vulgar,’ replied the Doctor. ‘Nobody does anything of importance on a Tuesday.’

There's a 2 hour full cast audio version of The English Way of Death next year from Big Finish, with Tom Baker, Lalla Ward & John Leeson as well.

Another advantage to this reprints is BBC Audiobooks are intending to do unabridged audiobooks of (at least some) the range too. Corpse Marker from the Monsters range has already been listed on Amazon.
