I've played 1st ED, AD&D 1st, 2nd, D&D 3rd ED and D&D 3.5 ED. Most have had house rules in them since AD&D (different character classes usually). I am currently in a D&D 3.5 game. As a house rule, people new to D&D get to create characters with high stats and Veteran players have one stat of 9. I think having low stats adds role playing. If we use 4.0, we will likely use house rules to role up the characters instead of having pregenerated characters.
I know some friends who are playing the Pathfinder variant of D&D3.5. I would say that people who are not used to D&D should stick to what they know, but then start to broaden their horizons a little (use some house rules).
