The grasp of Phoenix

Did any of you really think that, as you walked out of Nemesis, that this day would come? And I don't mean another Trek movie, I mean a big time TREK movie with all the trimmings?

Sure, it is clear that many TREK fans will not like this movie because of its obvious liberties with the continuity (to me this is a plus not a negative)...but I have to tell you, after the wreck of a movie that Nemesis was, I thought TREK, where movies were concerned, were dead..in fact, I thought we'd be lucky to get a cartoon series after that movie...

TREK XI is with out a doubt the most important movie since TMP. So much is riding on this movie, and I hope, like the Phoenix, it rises to an ever more brighter future...

After Nemesis, I was thinking (and kind of hoping) straight to video projects. Certainly not a serious attempt at reconnecting with audiences like we're seeing with this.

I knew that there would be another film, eventually.

I just didn't expect it to come this soon, or to be greeted by TPTB with such intense enthusiasm. I also didn't expect Paramount to be throwing this kind of money at it.

Yep...I totally agree. I wonder if its because they own TREK and know that if they don't get it right this time, TREK might be dead dead dead....Give them credit, I sure do, for doing this. Yes, its a youth movement, but I think TREK has needed this for sometime.

And to be more honest? I think BERMAN saw the writing on the wall too. But Enterprise, his attempt at trying something new, didn't go quite far enough and just seemed a half ass attempt at times...

TREK XI is definately a new direction. You and I both know that segments of TREKDOM will cringe at it, but I say so what? Its time for TREK to go where no TREK has gone before, in terms of reaching for new fans...NEMESIS brought BERMAN trek to an end with a loud thud. One can only hope that in may we don't have another loud thud (though there are some who are hoping for that)

I thought there would be another movie, but nothing on the scope this new movie was going to be. Its going to be an exciting May :)

I was confident that there would be more filmed Trek in the near term. I was (pleasantly) taken unawares when the decision to go back to the original characters was announced. I certainly wasn't expecting that this amount of money would be spent on a new film. I was quite surprised that Paramount settled on a handful of parties as visionaries and followed their lead, as opposed to trying to build a Trek project around name actors. I was taken aback when the decision was made to double down and move the new film to a summer berth. It's been a fascinating two years.

i am not suprised especially after the split up of viacom.
seperating out the movie division is making it easier.

and the movie franchise survived the fifth film it can survive nemesis.

Actually, it didn't survive nemesis..it got everyone fired...just thought I'd point that out...

uhmm no it didnt..
really the split while in the end is a help to the movie division also played a big part in the end of the prior guard.
more so then just one movie or series.

Given it's profound failure at the box office - no, I didn't expect anything on this scale so soon.

I didn't expect Paramount to have the balls to agree to this long-needed re-vamp.

It was easy to see that Star Trek had turned into a creatively-stagnant property that only a handful of fans still cared about, and one that was very far disconnected from the "dynamic" creative film world.

However, I never thought they would do anything to fix it -- I always assumed it would forever be in its stagnant and static state of non-creativity. I thought another movie was possible, but it would be in the same bland and unsophisticated formula as Insurrection and Nemesis.

I think this will be one of the most creative Star Trek's yet -- even though it uses existing characters from an "already-passed-by" time period (in an "in-universe" sense).

NEM was the only Trek movie I didn't see in a theater. Actually, to this day, I've never seen the entire movie, only snippets. I gave ENT every chance, but couldn't get enthused.
In that envirornment, I have to say I was surprised and excited when I first heard of this movie. Not that there'd be one, but the direction they were taking. My God, they're actually taking a chance! I was getting so weary of Trek before this.

Regardless of how this movie does, they'll be no going back to Trek as it was.

Thats my view.

Trek became stale and constantly re-hashed. Take Enterprise and Voyager, basically TNG with a new setting and characters. Although i must admit, the production design for Enterprise was good, but thats it.

Id never have thought that TPTB woul have said yes to such a project, but i guess its due to the fact that J.J has created a few cash cows, and the fact they think the sun shines out of his arse, that they have given the consent and confidence that he can deliver.

And im right by them on that. I believe that a new creative team is needed, other wise we will just get stale set designs and costume designs by very VERY familiar designers whose style is so familiar to Trek fans that we dont even realise its a new set/costume.

We need this sort of thing, not so much to stick two fingers up to older fans, but to give a new look and feel that is much needed. There hasnt been such a big since, well, DS9 to be fair. Nothing ot date has been as far removed from Trek as DS9 was when it premiered.

I love the look of the sets, not so much the uniforms, but the sets by far are excellent. Yeah, theyre very 2001 etc but wtf, we wanted a new take, not really re-hashing TOS characters, but they have done what they wanted to and it looks as if it has paid off. We are seeing the origin of these iconic charcters. It looks good.

But if they dont go to Genes original drafts/origins who cares, ST producers hardly ever paid attention to them anyway. If you look at the Trek universe, there is a miriad of continuuity gaffs that you dont even bother anymore, because producers/writers want to tell their version of a certain charcters origin for any given episode.

Personally, i cant wait, especially after the abysmal latter TNG movies.

Of course in doing so it leaves behind Star Trek and thus is not really Star Trek.

Bullshit. Successful Star Trek is somehow not Star Trek? No wonder the franchise is in the gutter. You know, there are 40+ years of previous material for you to enjoy and wrap yourself in. Like a nice, warm, pseudo-niche-like blanket.

as a child star trek was a constant. we lived in army bases all over the world but in the seventies you could pretty much guarantee finding star trek on tv, although not in english i didn't care. it was my security blanket but i love tng and the others. I always thought that they couldn't stop the movies but that maybe voyager would b next.going bac 2 neelix, returning 2 his home moon and finding a way to put all those people bac 2gether. this prequel is a briiliant idea.it does clash with some of our previous history but i'm really going 2 enjoy it

i'm very surprised that any new trek has been made after nemesis or after enterprise got cancelled. though when i first heard about the new film i thought 'oh no not another time travel one' but after seeing a trailer and what i've been hearing it may sound pretty good
