The Gorns!

As a kid in the seventies I was thrilled by the episode Arena and the reptillian Gorn! I would have loved them to have returned at least the once (this was before I learned that the story was based upon Fredric Brown's tale) let alone for them to have become a recurring enemy! Even to this day i still get a chill when I see Kirk disappear from the Enterprise bridge and turn around to face the green skinned, white eyed lizard monster on an unnamed asteroid! Can't say I was that thrilled with the Metrons though....Lol

Given they had two Gorn suits (as evidenced by a photo from Justman's office in Inside Star Trek as I recall) I was always surprised that, cash strapped as they were, that they never wrote another episode featuring them.

It seems such a waste to us Gorn fans and in fact they were never mentioned again in TOS! I think there isn't another reference to them until DS9's Way of The Warrior and even then it's just talk of Cestus III!

The Gorns would have been a great race to have involved in an episode instead of continually introducing yet another 'one shot' race. They could even just show the ship and recycle the existing suit with a mocked up bridge behind it for a viewscreen scene...

Liked the episode quite a bit. Given how "unnimble" and seeming lack of dexterity the Gorn commander, I always wondered how the Gorn would be able to build an intricate starship. I wonder if there was a scientific class of eggs that were more able to perform this task.

Similar to a POTA society. Gorillas being the warriors, Chimps the scientists, etc.

I, too, would have liked to see the Gorn again.

We did get a reptillian like alien in TAS on two occasions, in "Jihad" and "Bem," but they weren't the same as the Gorn.

We also saw what looks like a Gorn representative sitting on the Ellysium council in TAS' episode "Time Trap."

Apparently it was a Gorn representative indeed! Nice to see that they appear somewhere, even dressed the same!

Reptiles slow down when the temp get colder, provided the Gorn are reptiles in the usual sense, their native environment could be very toasty and they would be very nimble in it.

:)

One of the neat things with the Gorn design is that they were reptilian like in overall form yet had insect like eyes. This helped foster the idea of alienness and from that we can assume the Gorn might look reptilian to us, but only in general appearance.

James Blish described them as like Dinosaurs or more specifically like a man shaped Tyrannosaurus! (But without the Rex) in the Star Trek 2 novel!

Aren't the Gorn later cool with the Fed b/c of James T not killing the Gorn commander?

I don't know if anything was really addressed later on in other series. I did read a Pocket Books TNG era novel once where I believe it was essentially a state if detente between the UFP and the Gorn. They basically stayed out of each others' way.

I have to catch that episode again. I know Sisko mentions wanting to ask Kirk about Cestus III in 'Trials and Tribble-ations.' (And, of course, the Gorn return in ENT's 'In a Mirror Darkly' two-parter). Also, one of the "Strange New Worlds" short stories, IIRC, has the Gorn Commander from 'Arena' meeting Sisko.

It was a crocodile thing right? I saw ENT but I don't acknowledge it as such as it contradicts TOS (and we can't have that can we) so ENT does not reside on my shelf as it were!
I remember hearing that the Gorn would be in it and I taped it but found it a very embarrassing scene to behold! Why couldn't they have got a guy in a monster suit just that once?

I hated what they did to the Gorn in ENT. Just ruined it.

"Star Trek Online" has the Gorn more closer to their TOS counterpart. Only difference is that the Gorn is 8 to 9 (?) feet, smaller eyes, and obviously more versatile (because they are pixelated rather than a man in a suit).

At least the ENT Gorn was far closer to Wah Chang's design than the (thankfully) unused concept intended for the '09 movie. That creature looked something more akin to a scaly orc, complete with "under-bit" tusks. It did not have the extended jaw of a reptile. As a concept unto itself, a unique species, it was interesting, but that movie creature was certainly no Gorn.

My only "beef" with the "Enterprise" Gorn was the lack of the iconic, insectoid compound eyes. Without them, it's just another crocodilian or gatoroid or raptor man. But it seems just about every interpretation since the original series and TAS wants to ignore that feature, Enterprise, Trek Online, the '09 movie, possibly others.

I wonder who decided to employ the bug eye motif, when and why? Was it Chang himself at the beginning, opting for something distinctively "alien". Was it the episode's director? Or, was that decision made later? There are some photos that show the Gorn costume pieces sitting upon atable located outdoors. Another shows them being worn, but without the tunic designed to hide the gaping seam at the neck and the coin sized ventilation holes punched into the torso. In both instances we see some differences from the costume depicted in the aired episode. First, the hands have fully separate fingers. The finished design appears to have five digits as well, but the index and middle fingers seem to be glueds together as well as the ring and pinky fingers, as iff to suggest a hand with three digits. But far more noticeable is the lack of sequins adhered to the "eyes". They appear to be a translucent, deep umber. Was the faceted eye concept a last minute change? If so, was it just to be "different" or did it result from the failure to create "realistic" reptilian eyes?

Does anyone know?

Sincerely,

Bill

ENT was a huge disappointment to me. I had hoped it would be stylized like the cage, sort of a retro 60s vibe which would have been very cool. As it was I wrote it off after watching the first season and not liking anything about it.

In my own tiny little mind, TOS is star trek. Add TAS and some movie bits and I'm good. The rest are just some off shoots that don't really interest me. (DS9? Yawn)

So .. Biased response.... I had to look up the ENT gorn just to see it... Can't compete with the classic.
