I had this thought myself but others have posted the same thought as a theory but in this short was the storm that young Michael Burnham saw in the sky the red matter explosion from Star Trek 2009 which rippled through multiple realities and was the point where the two timelines diverged?

I suppose it could be.

Burnham was born in 2226, so she would have been seven years old when the timelines diverged.

I don't remember how old she's supposed to be in the Short Trek though.

I just took it as weird shit going on in the cosmos, and a nice throwback to '09. It's possibly the result of experiments with the Red Angel tech.
