GENERAL LEE
Dukes-of-Hazard_Car-Chase.jpg

Looks like them Duke Boys have got themselves in a mess o’trouble again, but ain’t no trouble they can get into that the ol’ General cain’t get ‘em out of. That hard-chargin’ muscle car was built to take on NASCAR’S best on the track and Sheriff Rosco’s finest on the back roads of Hazzard County. Ain’t no shine runner it cain’t outrun, ain’t no ravine it cain’t jump and everybody knows that when they hear that horn play “Dixieland” that Boss Hogg and the bad ol’ boys of the county are in trouble, ‘cause the General Lee is bringin’ justice right to ‘em.

THE DUKES OF HAZZARD

Derived from the 1975 movie “Moonrunners,” The Dukes Of Hazzard was an action/comedy series that was a staple of american television for seven seasons on CBS. It was the story of the Duke Family (Bo, Luke, Daisy and Uncle Jesse) of Hazzard County and their attempt to live a normal life while contending with the schemes of county “Boss” Jefferson Davis Hogg and his corrupt Sheriff Rosco P. Coltraine. The General Lee was a customized 1969 Dodge Charger.

The word was they used up two or three hundred Chargers in the run of the show. I was surprised to see a photo above with the General's doors open, the lack of working doors was such a signature of the car. I always wondered how they could secure the car; they had to leave the windows down or they couldn't get back in. And what would happen in the rain?

The show was must-see for a couple of years when I was a kid, but it wore out pretty quickly. The car never grabbed me, and I'm not crazy about Confederate flags, so "meh."

Perhaps if there were some pictures of Daisy (either TV or Movie version) washing it...

Now, now... the thread's about the car. Let's not get nobody mad...

I always watched because when it was on my older brother was still at home and his first car was a '70 Charger, so I always had a real life example to compare the General to right in the driveway.

As for the stars and bars, well, I always accepted it as "It's the south." I never thought much about it.

The Dukes deliberately welded the General's doors shut, though I don't remember there being an explanation for WHY they did that. As JTB pointed out, the windows are always open, so it's not like welding the doors would make the car any harder to steal...

I didn't think anything of it at the time. Guess I was too young to understand what that flag meant.

I do remember being a bit confused as to why there are no siblings or parents on the show - it's all cousins, uncles, aunts, etc.

I think the idea was that it was actually a racing car; the sides being "solid" allows the body to be reinforced so it doesn't flex and can take curves faster.

Growing up on the West Coast, I learned about the Confederate Flag long before I ever heard about some hokey 60s TV show, so my reaction to the car's name and roof was a big ol' :wtf: from the get-go. As such, I gotta vote .

^ Ah. That does make sense. Especially since Bo and Luke are NASCAR drivers, apparently...

^ Well, NASCAR (remember when they raced real cars?) is proud of its heritage of good old boys running moonshine, so it seems appropriate.

'60s? I'm not that old!

Gaith, it was 1979 to 1985. Even the car isn't that old.

OMG OMG! How can this be the "Car of the Week"!
It sports the Conderate Flag.... a symbol of slavery, oppression, and redneckicism that needs to be wiped clean from the annals of US History and memory! It represents nothing good about our great nation! It, like the Confederate flag, must be abolished from memory!!!!

:D

I liked the General Lee when I was a kid. Didn't care for the flag, but it didn't bother me either. The car was like the redneck version of KITT long before KITT was KITT. (As anti-redneck as I am, it is one of the few symbols of redneckicism that I don't mind. :) )

-Turbo boost? Check
-Jumping places where jumps weren't even supposed to be possible? Check.
-Voice. Well, if the Dixieland horn was the car's voice, so to speak? Then-- Check.
-Invulnerability? Well.... Check, I guess. I mean, you hardly ever saw a scratch on it.

Good pick, Admiral. :)

Oops. That does explain why Schneider still looks so young on Smallville... :rommie:

... but, I stand by my downward thumb. :p

Fair enough. For the record, I'm not claiming "youthful ignorance." The thing is named after General Lee, after all. My Social Studies education is not so woeful that I had no idea back then which General Lee was being referenced. I've always seen Dukes of Hazzard as a cartoonish take on the deep rural south. So of course the nephews of a southern moonshiner named their car after a rebel General and decorated the roof with that general's battle flag, cause why not? What else were they gonna do?

I figured I'd get the controversial one out of the way early so everybody can vent their spleen and move on...

LOL! I agree. :)
BTW, the quote in your signature is one of my favorite lines from the film of Hunt for Red October. And Greer was an awesome character. :)

LOL!

I do love the car. Late 60s and early 70s chargers are my favorites. Way better then the mustang. The colors, the number and yes the flag compliment each other perfectly. You would think red, white and blue colors on top of a orange roof would look out of place by it actually fit.
