The Future of Trek Gaming: What Do You Want to See?

So we've recently had the D.A.C. XI movie tie-in game come out, which I found a disappointment even knowing what it would be, and we have the MMO coming out, which I'm not too excited about. So, I want more.

I can't help but find myself wishing for a more hybrid "Klingon Academy"/"Legacy" combat sim, the control complexity being somewhere in between... maybe one in which, like in "Armada," you get to rotate through the different races around a central plot? Something that is for PC as well as for XBOX/PS3, and has an online multi-player component.

Plus, maybe something that new content will be released for afterwards, one of my biggest disappointments with the XBOX version of Legacy. It would be interesting if one were able to actually mod a console game. :vulcan:

What would you like to see? From mild to wild... realistic to dream scenarios?

I want an upgraded Bridge Commander sequel or Secret of the Vulcan's Fury to be completed...

I like your reasoning on the games, Praetor. I've never played the other games mentioned but wish there were some titles for the 360. I would love to see maybe a version of something like Romulan Academy, it could prove to be interesting. I also think a very complex RPG/shooter/sim (along the lines of Mass Effect or KOTOR) would be very cool for the console community. Perhaps the story line could involve more exploration and problem solving and the side quests would be the more sim and shooter involved stuff.

I can't wait for 10 years time and VR becomes an affordable reality in your own living room. Being able to wear a helmet and see the Enterprise corridors and interact with other folk on the www would be terrific. :)

25th Anniversary and Judgement Rights with new graphics.

I'd also like to see a Star Trek computer game that has open-ended exploration. You start out with one of the classic ships, train your crew, and seek out new life and new civilizations. Key canon systems will remain, but there could be a huge unexplored area full of strange encounters. But also make the exploration itself fun. Just flying into a new system and scanning the planets, orbiting some, should be fun itself.
Hopefully something like what STO might be

I'd like to see a Mass Effect/KOTOR type RPG - but with elements from Bridge Commander included. I'd also like it to be a bit more open ended too:)

I'd also like to see an Elite Force 3 and an update to the original 25th Anniversary/Judgement Rights game would be nice to play again.

I second this, especially if its pre-Romulan War or set between the beginning of STXI and most of the action.

The only thing I want that I can't already have is new, more detailed Star Fleet Battles miniatures. Only a few ships are available in the old Lou Zocchi plastics, and the metal ones are pretty substandard compared to the work of GHQ, Dark Reaper, Saganami Island, or other manufacturers.

Seeing as how Mass Effect is basically a Trek story, why not?

Anyway, as far as fleet combat goes, as much as I liked Armada, i'd love to have a game similarly designed as Fire Emblem. Just give ships various strengths and weaknesses along a grid, emphasize strategy as opposed to all guns blazing, and you'd have a fine Trek-based tactical game. The last two main Fire Emblem games for the GameCube and the Wii were big successes.

The Fire Emblem template is an intriguing one, Cyke101. :)

A KOTOR-type game would be really awesome, too.

This, with some of the puzzle elements of 25th Anniversary/A Final Unity added in. I think that would make for the perfect Star Trek game, I'm a bit sick of all the game solely focusing on the combat aspect of things, that's not representative of Star Trek.

It really depends on what the MMO is like, but this question was asked many years ago and basically I wanted a 'show simulator'.

So you start on a ship, and that can be flown around and you can have ship battles. Then you can find planets, and beam down to them with a selected away team, and you can have battles on the ground but also solve conundrums.

So, yeah, Mass Effect is pretty much what I envisioned, except I'd make it more open-world, so that instead of having one primary mission, you activate 'episodes' by going to certain worlds (and cues to go to specific locations could be seeded by the game, as in Mass Effect) that then play out. The ultimate game would have 26 episodes to represent a season, of course.

I guess this is a pretty big undertaking, but they did it for Mass Effect and even the crappy trek games sell so imagine how well a GOOD Trek game would sell. This would be my ideal trek game.

Yeah, KOTOR/Mass Effect style RPG is an awesome way to go. The galaxy exploration map gave me major Trek vibes.

I'd really like to see another KA-style space sim. That game was the cat's pyjamas.

Say, Jitty, I like the way you think. ;)

I wonder what the odds are of getting a release of older games (older games like 25th Anniversary and even newer ones like Armada, Elite Force, KA, etc.) on discs for XBOX/PS3 or on live download? I imagine the licensing rights would be complex

Given that Galactic Civilisations 2 has been a game I've continued to play since I first got my hands on it in 2006 I'd like to see a BOTF 2 that takes some its queues from GC2. Nice big galaxy, the ability to customise ships weapons, defences and other aspects including look. Big tech tree that differs between races. The diplomacy and trade model from GC2 as well.

As for combat I'd prefer the Total War model of real-time combat with turn based everything else and add in "generals"/"admirals" or special units (so you can have the Enterprise or other famous ships from the shows and movies). Maybe even add a surface combat as per SW: Empire at War.

Basically I'd like a good Trek strategy game.
