Song of the Machine: In Depth

Screencaps & video included: http://superflux.in/blog/song-of-the-machine-in-depth

"What if we could change our view of the world with the flick of a switch? The emerging field of optogenetics combines genetic engineering and electronics to manipulate individual nerve cells with light.

With this technology, scientists are developing a new form of retinal prostheses. Using a virus to infect the degenerate eye with a light-sensitive protein, wearable optoelectronics can establish a direct optical link with the brain.

Song of the Machine explores the possibilites of this new, modified – even enhanced – vision, where wearers adjust for a reduced resolution by tuning into streams of information and electromagnetic vistas, all inaccessible to the ‘normally’ sighted."

This looks good, and going further than just seeing in infra-red and stuff there's an internet connection in it too to identify locations and where your facebook friends are.

With genetic engineering, why not just use stem-cells to create a new eyeball and the nerves that connect to the brain?

And as for the ability to see infrared and stuff, perhaps there will be an ability to genetically engineer a human to see such colors by manipulating the genes for the rods and cones.

Yeah, and with that to allow a stalker to see everything you see and track you wherever you go.

But they would be a blind stalker.....

The feature of identifying buildings and notifications as to when the next bus is coming is cool and this could also be used for the not so visually impaired as well. Just have to come up with a smaller and more stylish design to wear one though.

I guess they would be stalking the blind, but if they could be stalked through this method it would be so much easier.

I honestly don't see the need for it. How hard is it to look at a map, or ask a person for directions?
