"The First Duty" and "The Drumhead"

Anyone else really appreciate these two?

Despite the fact they're a bit more laid back in the sense they're both not about planet swallowing crystalline entities, but about Federation Legal Procedure and courtroom intrigue, I just adore these episodes.

For me, some of the best character interactions in the whole of TNG were Picard and Crusher when Picard confronts him with the truth in Duty and obviously when Picard invokes Admiral Saties own father against her, causing her to lose her shit.

"The First Duty of every Starfleet officer..." just get goosebumps.

Your thoughts?

Great episodes. I tend to really enjoy the courtroom episodes from all of the series. It's a different sort of drama and tension from what we usually see on Trek and I find that refreshing.

I like both of these episodes, especially First Duty. Even though it's fictional, it feels good to see the truth prevail. In our day and age, when entire societies(at least those in positions of power) can become corrupt or compromised, it's nice to see a future where the honest man wins the day. Picard is that honest man.

I watched The Drumhead a couple of years and remember disliking the ending. I like Picard's speech about destroying a man.
I always loved the General Grin edit of this where Picard has had enough of Satie and has Worf kill her with a bat'leth. Then Riker wakes up and starts clapping.

"The Drumhead" is one of my favourite episodes. One of those great gems that seems even more relevant today than it did in the early 1990s. Top-notch performances and a great story idea.

"The First Duty" I'm a little more lukewarm on - it's certainly on the "good" side of the spectrum though.

General Grin Edit?! You must tell me where to find this!
This isn't the exact one, but if you watch this one it should take you through the rest of them. You are in for a treat!

These two episodes were among the highlights for me during my TNG rewatch last year. My gf and I love "courtroom episodes" on Star Trek. The Drumhead remains extremely relevant today, unfortunately.

The Drumhead is one of the best episodes, The First Duty is a good episode.

No matter how much we think we've advanced we always have to be vigilant about the spectre of McCarthyism.

I adore Starfleet insider stuff, like courtroom episodes. Add to it The Measure of a Man, & sadly, that's all there were. I could watch a whole show called Star Trek: Law & Order. lol

The Drumhead was an outstanding episode, And it cost them nothing to make.

The First Duty is good too. For me, Wheaton started acting when he ceased to be a regular.

Great episodes. Worf & Picard had great interaction in the Drumhead. The First Duty also very good and has some funny trivia. For one thing Patrick Stewart looks like he might fall asleep during the courtroom scenes and they mention this in the commentary. Also I can't help but Locarno is the same guy as Tom Paris since the characters are almost identical as far as personalities go.

They are both solid dramas, well written and acted. "The Drumhead" was Ron Jones final score for TNG. :wah:

I also love both of these episodes. They are both top 20 ep's IMO. I especially love "The Drumhead" on another level and that is that they got to do this instead of a clip show which I read they were thinking of doing because there wasn't much money left in the budget to do anything else.
