The Final Post

I got to thinking that as of right now, I can't imagine ever leaving this place. I've had some good times and met a lot of great people that unless I stopped caring about Media in general, I will probably be here until the end. Of course, nothing really does last forever as there will be a point where I do stop posting either through death of the board or myself. Inspired by The Last Lecture, I thought I would make my "Last Post" as a sort of reflection (and a round about way to put off studying).

Well, they say you can never leave, but I guess everyone's time eventually runs out. It is time for change and to move on.

I have received some criticism from real-life friends about posting here. Not in the sense that it was a Star Trek board, but more in the sense that a good percentage of my social life is on this board. That is not to say I don't have a social life outside this board (Trek 21 won't watch itself in the theaters), but I am heavily invested in this community. Some might view it as sad, but I view it as a blessing. I have lived a very transitory existence. I grew up a military brat and that tradition of uprooting every few years has stuck with me in my adulthood. Some of my long-term friends I keep in contact with and visit every once in a while (and some of them I have dragged around with me :p), but this place has been an anchor. No matter where I go, this place always comes with me and has been a comfort.

As strange as this might sound, I have never been alone because of this place (especially when I was single). The 'need' for this place has lessened over the years especially since I got married, but there are people here who I have shared things with so long that I never wanted to stop. And yet, here I am.

As this community has moved into a generational one (I started posting here before some of you were even born), it will be a bit sad to leave it. To some of you I have been the crazy uncle, to others the passioned political scientist, and to most of you, (hopefully) a good friend. We have all shared our lives over the years so much that we are all intertwined. We all laughed when the ThreadBombs Thread accidently shut down the board, we all cried with joy when Trekker met, dated, and (well you know the rest) with that lovely girl, and we all morned each lost member to real life. And I guess it is time to lose another one. :(

So I want to say thanks to everyone here. I might not have agreed with some of you or even liked some of you, but I am still glad you are all here. Together, we have created a real community that is as real as any town on the map. Something greater than ourselves.

And that makes us mighty.

P.S. Squiggy, you can have your kilt back if you really want it.

So, what's your final post?

So, what's your final post?

So long, and thanks for all the fish.

Seriously, I'd probably just fade away into the background as I'm not exactly a prolific poster anyway.

I can't remember what my last posts at any other forums have been. I could find out on one, but as for the others, one kind of shut down so I wasn't expecting it to be my last post at the time and another lost all it's old posts when the database was lost.

I shall slowly fade away like a chicken disappearing into the mist on an chilly autumn morn, and my final post will be lost in the crowd like a chicken disppearing into a crowd of other chickens. On a chilly autumn morn. Probably.

It's been fun. Oh my.

Too lame? :p Fine, then what about this?

Tell my story to all who ask. Tell the good along with the bad, and let history judge me accordingly. The rest is silence.

Since you all know me, you know when and if the day comes, it will be epic!!

I know you would expect nothing less.

Out with a bang, like always.

Probably this:

Well, fellow BBSers, as you know, the Deep Space Survey Ship will engage its fusion reactors in a couple of hours. By the end of the day, our acceleration will be such that communications will be red shifted out of detectable range; the signal delay would make Posting impractical, anyway. I promise to send a greeting when we reach mid-point turnaround and another when we reach Alpha Centauri. After that, I'll probably be too busy until I return to the Solar System in 150 years. I'll see you all then. I'm sure JJAbrams will do a fine job Modding in my absence. He did a great job redesigning the BR! Well, take care. I'll miss you guys.

Or something.

"I fucking hate you all."

Oh wait, I say that all too often, especially in that forum that we're not to talk about outside of it.

So in this case, "I fucking hate you all. Especially you, Holdfast, you Anne Hathaway stealer!"
