The Expanse

How many of you are fans of The Expanse? I love the show. It is the best space/sci-fi show since Battlestar Galactica.
I love the characters. It is intelligently written. It is well-acted.
I am starting to read the books. Great books!

Agreed that Expanse is the first great TV scifi drama since nBSG. How are the books - what is the quality of writing?

And is it worth it? For parts of the books that cover what the show has already covered, I would think reading would be pretty boring. On the other hand, I like the show too much to read parts of the story from the books that haven't made it into the show yet. Wouldn't they feel like spoilers?

So many questions...

As someone who started with the books (although it was because of the show being in development I became aware of them) I found the books rather meh. The universe they create is a lot more interesting than the stories themselves, although the characters are a lot more interesting in the novels than they come off on the show, IMO.
For parts of the books that cover what the show has already covered, I would think reading would be pretty boring.
I wouldn't worry about that, the entire first season only covers the first half of the first novel. So with five novels already out, and a sixth due out before the new season begins, there's definitely more new material to read up on than stuff already covered in the show.

Maybe. It's true the show doesn't really deviate too much from the novels, at least not in any serious way, with the obvious exception of Avasarala. We don't know if this will always be the case, indeed casting information for the second season indicates we'll be moving onto the events of the second novel at some point in the season, so clearly the remaining half of the first novel isn't going to have the whole season dedicated to it.

And even if the show remains faithful to the novels, so? This doesn't seem to bother fans of The Walking Dead or Game of Thrones at all.

I only read about half way through the first book before I set it aside (not out of dislike, I was just cutting down on the number of things I was reading) and I think somethings do play out slightly differently, so it's not like you'll just be reading the exact things that happen in the show.

All we know is it airs in 2017. If indeed it does air in January, that's still a little over a "few" months away. At five months away, it's still close to half a year.

Five certainly qualifies as 'a few.' The word means a small number but more than one. And I can't believe I actually took the time to argue about something so tedious and pointless.

The term "a few" is generally understood to mean "three", with anything more falling under the term "several".

As far as the show goes, I enjoyed what I saw, and really need to find a way to get caught up.

:cardie:

Those were certainly the most pedantic and picky series of posts I've read in a long time.
We'll argue about anything, won't we.

Damn, January 2017 is a happening month. New seasons of The Expanse and Sherlock plus Star Trek Discovery. Good thing I take vacations in January.

Looking forward to it. Found there are a few interviews from SDCC with cast on youtube. This season should be good.
